Magic and adventure abound in this second book in the Dragon Lad trilogy.

"Tale of the Talisman" follows our young, dragon-hatched hero as he seeks his parents, his past and his destiny in Roman-ruled Britannia. A boy without a history -- at least one that he can remember -- Dirk turns to his shape-shifting friends for help. They launch him on a quest involving the one clue he has to his previous existence: a magic talisman.

The wizard Beldor gives Dirk a ring that allows him to re-enter the realm he thought he'd left behind. Armed with this ring and a magic map, he travels a trail leading to a raging dragon, a slippery mermaid, two grasping sorcerers and a legion of Roman soldiers. He also rediscovers a long-lost friend and powers he never imagined.

Fast-paced and funny, "Dragon Lad: Tale of the Talisman" is a modern classic that can be read alone or as a companion to the first novel in the trilogy, "Dragon Lad: The Thirteenth Egg."

Excerpt
CHAPTER ONE

Mist-Spell

Dirk set his satchel on the seacliff, and breathed in the chill salt air.

There are times I wish I were still a dragon. Not forever, but I sure could have used a set of dragon wings for this journey. And dragon-fire to keep me warm....

For the past four days, he‘d slogged over frost, snow and ice at a pace worthy of a Roman legionary. He‘d stopped only to eat, sleep, and rub the numbness out of his frozen, blistered toes.

Determined to reach his destination, he‘d raced across the strange, ancient landscape of Britannia. He‘d wandered through eerie, fog-bound woods, farmsteads and bogs; past centuries-old tin and coppermines and even older moss-covered fingers of rock pointing to the sky. He‘d torn his clothes on bramble thorns, dirtied his shoes crossing sheep and cow tracks and come close to tumbling down the sheer, rugged slopes lining the coast. He‘d gone as far west as he could go without leaping off the bluffs.

A stranger in an unfamiliar yet bewilderingly familiar realm, he hadn‘t lingered to ask about his surroundings. The only history that interested him was his own. The mystery of his origin had compelled him to travel alone during a season better spent huddling by a fire. He hungered for action, hungered for certainty in his uncertain existence, and the journey fed the hunger.

Tall and slim, with raven hair and eyes of a gold hue rare in humans, Dirk possessed the outward appearance of a boy of twelve human years. But he could only remember the past seven months of his existence. For all he knew, his life had begun the previous spring, when he‘d hatched as a dragon.

But just as birds and reptiles molt, casting off their old feathers and scales, the dragon Dorg shed his skin to become Dirk, the boy hatched as a dragon... but perhaps also born human.

And now he dwelled in a world as vague and grey as the approaching dusk: a world in which he was not quite human, not quite dragon, and might revert at any moment. Living in two worlds and welcome in neither, he yearned desperately to learn where he truly belonged.

by Donald Firesmith
Genre: YA/MG Urban Fantasy

Matt's life changes forever when a family of druids moves into the dilapidated Victorian mansion next door. The story of an unlikely friendship, the clash of two completely different cultures, secret magic, and a search for the lost Hawthorne treasure.

Fifteen-year-old Matt Mitchell was having the worst summer imaginable. Matt’s misery started when a drunk driver killed his mother. Then his father moved him and his twin sister to the small town of Hawthorne in rural Indiana, as far as his grieving father could take from the ocean that Matt's mother had loved. At the new high school, three bullies are determined to make Matt miserable. And to top it off, Matt learns that the recluse who lives in the 'haunted house" next door is none other than Old Lady Hawthorne, the town’s infamous witch and murderer. Matt’s terrible summer is turning into an awful autumn when something quite unexpected happens. Old Lady Hawthorne’s niece and her three children arrive, and Matt meets Gerallt.

Book Trailer

A geek by day, Donald Firesmith works as a system and software engineer helping the US Government acquire large, complex software-intensive systems. In this guise, he has authored seven technical books, written numerous software- and system-related articles and papers, and spoken at more conferences than he can possibly remember. He's also proud to have been named a Distinguished Engineer by the Association of Computing Machinery, although his pride is tempered somewhat by his fear that the term "distinguished" makes him sound like a graybeard academic rather than an active engineer whose beard is still slightly more red than gray.

By night and on weekends, his alter ego writes modern paranormal fantasy, apocalyptic science fiction, action and adventure novels and relaxes by handcrafting magic wands from various magical woods and mystical gemstones. His first foray into fiction is the book Magical Wands: A Cornucopia of Wand Lore written under the pen name Wolfrick Ignatius Feuerschmied. He lives in Crafton, Pennsylvania with his wife Becky, and his son Dane, and varying numbers of dogs, cats, and birds.

Born in Florida, I am a resident of the US, but now I reside on a lovely island in British Columbia Canada. During the early years of my life, I worked in the business industry, thus reaching my goal of obtaining my degree in Business Management.

I love to read, and over my lifetime, I have probably read hundreds of books. Now that life has given a bit more time to concentrate on my personal life, I am following God and writing fun, fanciful fiction stories, which blend over into the fantasy realm.

My first amazing middle-grade fantasy series is now out, "The Four." There are very little violence and no wars. This is my attempt to provide lovely fanciful readings to the young to stimulate their imaginations.

God is the mentor of my life, and to Him, I give thanks for all things.

THE EYE OF RA | by Ben Gartner #MiddleGrade #Adventure #Excerpt #AuthorInterview #Giveaway #GoddessFish

Welcome to my stop on the excerpt tour for The Eye of Ra by Ben Gartner.  This tour was organized by Goddess Fish Promotions.  Here on my stop, I have a semi-exclusive excerpt for you, my interview with the author himself as well as the tour-wide giveaway, which is for a chance to win a $30 Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift card.  Pretty cool stuff, right?  Be sure to follow the rest of the tour for more exclusive excerpts and opportunities to enter the giveaway.  Have fun and enjoy it!

The Eye of Ra
by Ben Gartner
Genre: Middle-Grade Adventure

BLURB:

Exploring a mysterious cave in the mountains behind their house, John and his sister Sarah are shocked to discover they’ve time-traveled to ancient Egypt!

Now they must work together to find a way back home from an ancient civilization of golden desert sand and a towering new pyramid, without parents to save them. The adventures abound—cobras, scorpions, a tomb robber, and more! The two kids have to trust each other, make friends who can help, and survive the challenges thrown at them . . . or be stuck in ancient Egypt forever.

For readers graduating from the Magic Treehouse series and ready for intense action, dive into this middle-grade novel rich with meticulous historical detail.

Excerpt:

“Sarah, where are we?” John asked, frozen in place despite the heat. In front of them was a vast ocean of sand as far as the eye could see. It rolled in carved waves, dunes that sparkled in the low-slanting rays of the sun.

Dunes? John thought.

Sarah staggered forward, shielding her eyes from the glare. “I—I—”

It was rare for her to be speechless. And it was kind of spooky, her not saying anything and stepping forward with the jerky movements of a zombie.

“Are you okay?” John followed his sister out into the sand, suddenly very afraid to be even a foot away from her.

“Woo-hoo!” she shouted, jumping into the air in her signature move, arms shooting up in a V shape.

“You’re excited about this?” John snapped. “Sarah, how are we in a desert all of a sudden? Where’s the mountain? The cave?” The incredible moment tickled at his brain, and he couldn’t put two and two together. “Am I dreaming?”

“Yeah,” Sarah said. “Dreaming. We must be dreaming. Together.” She knelt into the sand, picked up a handful, and let it drain out of her fist. “This feels pretty real to me.” She turned around to John as she said it, so he could see the roll of her eyes.

“How could we be in the mountains in one moment and then . . .” He trailed off, watching Sarah’s eyes go up and her head tilt back, taking in something very large behind him. John wasn’t sure he wanted to turn around.

Sarah laughed, her face turned toward the sky, her hand covering her mouth. “So.” She took a full breath. “Cool!”

The curiosity got the better of him. John held his breath and rotated on his heels in the sand. He’d been stunned by the vast golden dunes, but what he saw now made him squeak out a chortle of disbelief.

“What—? How—? Is that—?” John stammered. His finger reached out, pointing to the scene as if maybe he could poke it, like it was a postcard of a giant pyramid and not a real one.

Interview:

1)    Describe your book in 280 characters (like a tweet).
"What good middle grade is all about." For graduates of the Magic Tree House series, THE EYE OF RA delivers intense action rich with meticulous historical detail.

2) Tell us about your characters - did they 'talk' to you?
Almost literally! This project was created in collaboration with my two children, so there are certainly some elements to John and Sarah taken from my own kids, but more so John and Sarah are most definitely their own unique characters.

3) Was one part of the story more difficult to write than the rest?
Time travel is tricky. Ha, understatement! It’s mind-blowing to think about and consider, and some of the early feedback on the first draft from adults tended to ask some of those questions. So, while in the final product we do explain a bit more about some of those aspects, this novel was not meant to dive deep into the wonders of time travel. Instead, we rely on real physical challenges and emotional conflicts to drive the story forward.

4) If you could co-write with another author who would it be and why?
Well, at the risk of sounding cheesy, I’m going to reiterate how this novel was born: in collaboration with my two kids. Working through the plot, the drafts, fleshing out the characters, that process of creation with them is something I’ll remember forever. <cue happy tears>

5) The world is under attack and you are forced to run for your life. You only have room for one book in your survival kit, what book do you take?
Well, if I wanted to be practical, I guess I’d choose some kind of Wilderness Survival guide. But assuming my family was with me, we’d probably need a bit of humor so probably a Calvin & Hobbes.

6) Think quickly: Milk or Dark Chocolate?
Milk came to mind first, but I’m a fan of both!

7) So what new projects do you have in the cooker?
Before THE EYE OF RA, I was working on a thriller for adults, but with the positive reactions we’ve received to this middle grade adventure book, I may need to insert another story for John and Sarah into my queue. My boys and I are already scheming, so we’ll see!

THE FRIGHTS OF FIJI (Alyssa McCarthy's Magical Missions: Book 1) | by Sunayna Prasad #ComingOfAge #MiddleGrade #Adventure #Excerpt #Giveaway #Series #GoddessFish

Welcome to my stop on the excerpt tour for The Frights of Fiji by Sunayna Prasad.  This tour was organized by Goddess Fish Promotions.  Here on my stop, I have an exclusive excerpt for you, my book report as well as the tour-wide giveaway, which is for a chance to win a $25 Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift card.  Pretty cool, right?  Be sure to follow the rest of the tour for more exclusive excerpts and opportunities to enter the giveaway.  Have fun and enjoy!

THE FRIGHTS OF FIJI
Alyssa McCarthy's Magical Missions: Book 1
by Sunayna Prasad
Published: Oct. 20, 2018
Pages: 136
Genre: Coming of Age/Middle-Grade Adventure

BLURB:

A world of magic and adventure awaits…

Sent to live with her strict, aloof, and uncaring uncle after her parents are killed in a car accident, twelve-year-old orphan Alyssa McCarthy longs for the life she used to have—one filled with fun and love. Then one stormy night, a message appears in the raindrops on the window that will change everything.

"Your life will never be the same again, as magic will interfere."

Before long, Alyssa is kidnapped by Master Beau, a banished sorcerer with a mysterious connection to her who can only regain his power by weakening hers. Suddenly hurled into a world of wizardry filled with fantastical beasts and marvelous technology beyond her wildest imagination, Alyssa must defeat Master Beau if she ever wants to get home again. But Master Beau will stop at nothing, including using Alyssa’s friends, to ensure he is triumphant.

Originally titled "From Frights to Flaws", this story is the exciting and enchanting first book in the "Magical Missions" series.

EXCERPT:

The raindrops darkened into black, looking as if ink fell from the sky. Alyssa leaned closer to them. She squinted to determine the shapes they formed on the kitchen window… letters.

No! That couldn’t happen. Yet, a message spelled out as more pigments plopped onto the glass. Alyssa gasped at what it said.

Your life will never be the same again, Alyssa McCarthy, as magic will interfere.

What? Magic didn’t exist—at least that’d been what others had told her when she was little. No one on Orion Street could possess enchanted abilities.

Alyssa had lived here since she’d lost her parents in that car crash five years ago. She’d only been seven then. How would she tell her uncle, Bruce, about this? He’d consider her crazy. He’d already toughened up his attitude and rules. So he might consider it an excuse to escape this house.

Although Alyssa’s parents had designated her godfather as the first priority guardian, Uncle Bruce forbade her to try and contact him. He’d hidden the phone number and other information about him.

Since Alyssa’s aunt, Laura had died three years ago, Uncle Bruce had required fun to be earned. And that took more effort than Alyssa could often accomplish.

Turning around, she spotted her babysitter, Mrs. Hutchinson, examining the kitchen floor. Alyssa’s eleven-year-old cousin, Hailey, watched the progress. Hailey had mopped the floor. Would she earn a break now? Ever since her uncle, Bruce, had hired Mrs. Hutchinson, Mrs. Hutchinson had admired the way Hailey had done her chores more than Alyssa.

“Hailey, you can take a break until your next chore,” said Mrs. Hutchinson. “Alyssa, get back to work. You’ve been staring at the rain for too long.”

“Okay.” Alyssa turned back—only to see the message gone and the rain back to its
normal transparency.

“What did I say?” asked Mrs. Hutchinson.

Alyssa sighed. “Fine, I’ll finish washing the dishes.”

MY REVIEW:

I loved this awesome book! I would totally recommend it for tweens! It's about a girl named Alyssa who discovers magic.  Her parents had died when she was young and she had to live with her relatives who she thought were mean. While she had to wait for the legal system to process her being able to go live with her Godfather, she gets kidnapped by a magical villain and taken to Fiji.

The story involves lots of twists and turns and is super creative. They do talk about death some and even plotting a death so decide if you are up for that before you read it. But if you love fantasy and magic as I do then I'd truly recommend this book.  It's a quick and fun book to read!

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I gratefully received this complimentary book I requested. I am leaving my review voluntarily and all opinions are my own.

10 Things I Didn't Know About Becoming a Published Author

This blog could be split into 2 separate blogs by inserting the words 'good' and 'bad' between '10' and 'Things'. Since it wasn't, I'll do that myself and list 5 of each. Whenever a good news-bad news joke gets told, the good news is told first. Since this isn't a joke, I don't feel compelled to follow that formula. So here are 5 bad things:
            1.  I am not comfortable making personal appearances. I am much more comfortable sitting at a keyboard in front of a computer screen on my desk in my basement office. I'd rather converse with the characters in my head than with flesh and blood beings.
            2.  I am not comfortable putting myself out there. I'd rather be writing my next book than writing this.
            3.  I do not have the temperament for sales. I tried that once long ago going door to door trying to sell home fire alarms. I didn't sell a one, earned not a penny for my troubles, and felt humiliated begging to get back the job I quit in order to do this.
            4.  I didn't know this would be so hard or take so long. I have been at this since my pre-teen years when I wrote poetry, then song lyrics, then a record review column, then short stories, then novels, then stage plays, then a web site, then screenplays, then more short stories, then more novels, then novellas, then a travel blog. Just remembering all that effort makes me tired.
            5.  The time writing takes away from other endeavors. I have compensated all my life by sleeping less so I could get up early in the morning to write. That meant I usually got 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night most of my life. Since I have retired I now get 6 to 7 hours a night. That's quite an improvement.
Now comes the good part - 5 good things:
            1.  I LOVE DOING THIS! There is no other thing I would rather invest my time in. I feel more alive crafting a story than at any other time. The only thing that comes close is when I'm hiking through the wilderness up a mountain along a beautiful stream to see an incredible waterfall. Nothing else touches this.
            2.  The sense of achievement when something I have written is published, be it in digital format or in print on actual paper. Sometimes I just sit and stare at the covers of the magazines, anthologies, and books that contain my stories.
            3.  Meeting other writers. I can talk politics with my political friends and talk sports with my sports friends, but I get really enthused talking writing with my writing friends.
            4.  How much I have learned. I enjoy doing research for my stories. With the Internet, this has become much easier. No more trips to the library or digging through encyclopedias (for younger readers, imagine Google printed out on paper). For example, I wanted to come up with some activity that could be done in a bog. I came across an article about moth walks. I had never heard of such a thing before (they are much more popular in Europe than here - I learned that in my research). I have never had the opportunity to go on one. But from reading accounts of moth walks people (mostly Europeans) have posted online, I got a general sense of how they went. So I put a moth walk in the part of my novel 'Shadytown' that took place in Cedar Bog (which by the way is a real place in Ohio).
            5.  How much hope is involved. It's easy, so I'm told, for people my age to endlessly mull over the past and yearn for younger days. Not me. I'm always looking forward for the next story to tell or the next book to be published. I'm always hoping for more.
Although the list is split evenly, the good greatly outweighs the bad. And the bad is getting better. I recently set up a book launch event for my new MG novel 'Shadytown'. Didn't hurt a bit, and I kind of liked the people I met. I'm looking forward to it and meeting I hope a lot more people.
