HASKELL HIMSELF | by Gary Seigel #Historical #LGBTQ+ #YA #BookReview #giveaway #XpressoTours

Haskell Himself
Gary Seigel
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: January 19th, 2020
Genres: Historical, LGBTQ+, Young Adult
Meet Haskell Hodge. At sixteen he’s already garnered some fame as a former child actor and star of a popular cereal commercial. But that doesn’t do much for him when he’s dumped at his aunt’s house in the suburbs of Los Angeles to face an assortment of neighborhood bullies.
He thinks he might be gay. In fact, he could be the only gay person in the valley, maybe on the entire planet. Even if he does manage to find a boyfriend, their relationship would have to be secret and invisible.
After all it’s 1966. And though Time Magazine claims the sexual revolution is in full swing, the freedoms straight people are enjoying don’t seem to apply to everyone. And as much as Haskell attempts to hide his true self, carefully navigating the tricky and risky terrain of being queer, he’s still taunted and teased relentlessly.
Rather than give in to the irrationality of this hate, Haskell fights back, eventually finding an unlikely outlet to vent his frustration and angst—playing a bully in a screen test for a major motion picture. If he plays his cards right, it could catapult him into Hollywood stardom.
Of course, like most things in life, it comes with a heavy price Haskell’s not certain he’s willing to pay.

My Review:

A truly touching story of a young man coming-of-age trying to find himself. HASKELL HIMSELF was truly relatable for everyone, no matter their age or sexual orientation.

While the book was centered in the '60s, it could just as easily been written for today.  The same teenage issues exist - bullying, self-acceptance, self-worth and being true to one's self. I'd say this is a must-read for all YA as it captures their issues so well.  As the mom of teens, I found it engrossing and one that I just could not put down.  Perfect for family discussions.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received this book free of charge and am gratefully and voluntarily leaving my review. All opinions are my own.

He also has spent the past two decades helping employees control their inner jerk when texting or holding conversations with an impossible boss. His book The Mouth Trap: Strategies, Tips and Secrets for Keeping Your Feet out of Your Mouth, published in 2008, has been translated into over a dozen languages. Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult
Sixteen-year-old Henley Abbott is just trying to make it through high school in the small town of Edison, Washington where she has lived her entire life. Constantly feeling alone, she’s surprised when she finds herself intrigued by the new boy in town, Cohen Davenport.
With the entire town talking about the new and secretive family, Henley refuses to join in on the rumors swirling about them and attempts to keep her distance.
However, as Cohen becomes intrigued by Henley, the pair seems to find a spark in a kindling friendship.
As the intensity of their relationship builds, Henley discovers a dark secret plaguing Cohen and his elusive family. He reveals a twisted past that has kept his family on the run…for decades.
Cohen should keep his distance. It is too dangerous to bring Henley into his life, but he can’t stay away from her.
And, Henley doesn’t want him to.
As Henley overcomes her own fears and trepidations, she finds herself engrossed in a battle that could destroy them both. Only their connection could help them all survive.
Intensely romantic and extremely thrilling, this novel will pull readers in from the very first page.
Fans of Twilight, The Guardian Series, and the Marked Saga will instantly fall in love with this new paranormal series.

EXCERPT:
As much as I liked to pretend, I wasn’t completely and totally intrigued by the thought of new people moving here; I couldn’t control myself. I tried to convince myself it was all because of my mom; but as I stood there, whispering the words, I knew there was no fooling myself.
“Henley, don’t you know it’s not polite to stare?” she asked, but her own hypocritical words hung heavy in the air as she raced to join me in the living room again.
Standing next to me, we watched intently as the driver’s side door opened. With large eyes, we strained to get a glimpse of who would be our new neighbor. To our surprise, the rest of the car doors opened and the family emerged.
A tall man with dark hair closed the driver’s side door as a woman emerged from the passenger’s side. The back two doors opened and three teens, roughly around my age, tumbled out. A girl with short, dark hair and legs-for-days gave the house a disgusted look. A boy who seemed to be uninterested in it all, stared down into his phone, which he held tightly in his grip. Finally, a tall boy with the same dark hair stood behind the rest of his family. With his hands tucked deep into his jeans pockets, he seemed reluctant to move any closer to the house.
“Well, they look like a nice family,” my mom said. I turned to look at her and I could see the eagerness twinkling in her baby blues to get to her phone and be the first one to spill the news that the new neighbors had arrived.
It was almost like they had landed in a spaceship and were from outer space!
“Maybe,” I grumbled, still unsure about these people.
Suddenly, the boy, standing alone behind his family, turned and caught me snooping on them. Our eyes connected for a brief moment before he gave me an angry snarl that had me stumbling backward.
What was that?
“I need to go call Susan,” my mom stated, as she rushed to the kitchen to retrieve her phone.
I dared to look back out the window again; and when I did, the entire family was gone.
Just disappeared, like they had never been standing there in the first place.
I blinked, just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. When I looked again, the SUV was still parked along the curb, but the family was gone.
Lights glowed from inside the house.
“That’s weird,” I said aloud to myself. How did they have time to get inside and turn on the lights? I literally just turned around for a second.
I shook my head, unsure of what to think. Peeking out of the window again, something in the far, second-floor window caught my attention. As my gaze moved up, I felt my cheeks burn and nervous energy flow through me. As my gaze finally landed on the window, I caught a pair of red eyes staring back at me. It was the same boy who had given me the nasty stare just moments before.
I closed the curtains and took a step back. My heart was racing so fast, I feared it might jump right out of my chest. With labored breathing, I slowly walked into the kitchen where my mom was blabbing the news to anyone who would listen.

REVIEW:
I know I always say that I love whatever type of book I have read but it's true and I love Paranormal romances. I did the blitz on Shadowed and decided it sounded so good and so intriguing that when Michelle offered me a copy, I could not turn it down!

Now, it turned out that it wasn't exactly what I expected with some characters I didn't care for but overall, I enjoyed the read. I cannot say which characters I didn't care for as that would be a spoiler but it kept me entertained throughout.  It was a quick read and had a unique spin on some Paranormal characters you don't usually see in this manner.  If you love Paranormal YA reads and are looking for something unique, give it a go!

3⭐️⭐️⭐️

GODS OF MERLIN | by Priya Ardis #YA #Fantasy #Paranormal #Mythology #Retelling #Excerpt #BookReview #Giveaway #PriyaArdis #GoddessFish

Hey y'all!  Thanks for dropping in on my tour stop today!  Along with an excerpt and my book review, Priya Ardis will offer a $25 Amazon/BN GC to one randomly drawn winner, and an autographed copy of the book to a second randomly drawn winner. Be sure to follow the tour and comment because the more you comment, the better your chances of winning. The tour dates can be found here.

Gods of Merlin
by Priya Ardis
GENRE: YA Fantasy Paranormal

BLURB:

GREAT GREEK GODS. THEY ARE COMING.
Foster kid and occasional shoplifter Eowlyn Patience just wants to fit into her Boston high school. When the Sword In The Stone falls out of the sky like a meteor into the middle of London’s Trafalgar Square, everything changes. Then, an enigmatic golden-eyed man arranges for her to attend a school for the gifted in England, and the irritatingly perfect Matt Emrys from science class turns out to be Merlin—the Merlin, King Arthur’s greatest wizard. Frozen in a cave for fifteen hundred years, Merlin has woken to find the next Arthur. Eowlyn Patience’s mysterious admittance to Avalon Preparatory was not something he foresaw…a disturbing aberration when his most powerful gift happens to be visions of the future. The race to find the rightful heir rages between deadly gargoyles, wizards, and Regulars, but figuring out the troubled Eowlyn might be by-the-book Merlin’s hardest job yet. She’s altogether the wrong girl. Torn between what is right and what saves lives, will Eowlyn do what it takes to win—even if it means sacrificing Merlin to a god?

EXCERPT:

“You are my Gwenhwyfar,” he said. “Or how do you say her name in your time? Guinevere.” I stood, wanting to run but knowing it would do no good. Because I was not in reality. I was in a dream. I played along. “Wasn’t Guinevere King Arthur’s wife? I’m a little young. I belong to no one.” “I did not come seeking a wife. My former love is the reason we are in this mess. I have chosen you to be my champion, my right hand. You will go where I cannot.” I growled in disbelief. “What makes you think I would do anything for you?” Golden eyes glowed as he considered me. Power radiated from his gaze. The power burned so bright, like the sun, that I would be burned if I looked too long. Then, golden eyes blinked. The light dimmed and I could breathe again. He peered at me. I dropped to my knees on the ground. He touched my cheek. “You will do it, Eowlyn Patience, because you crave what I do. You would do anything to leave this small life behind. You would do anything for a bit of power.” His thumb traced the line of my jaw. “Seize the day, my champion.”

MY REVIEW:

Wow!  My mind is reeling after reading this book.  I do love a good retelling of a fairytale or myth and that is what we have here ladies and gents.  A pretty amazing retelling of the story of King Arthur and Camelot!  We have olde English names, Excalibur, magic, Merlin, training, battles, gargoyles, trials, the Lady of the Lake, threats and the ever-present question of just who is the rightful heir?  How could this not be exciting, I ask you?  And it was, it was.  The only thing I found it lacking was that special umph, that "it" factor, that one thing to take it right on into a solid five.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it was just me.  I enjoyed the book and would encourage you to add it to your TBR list for sure.

DON'T CALL ME KIT KAT | by K.J. Farnham #Teen/YAFiction #Teen/YAMedicalIssues #Depression #HighSchool #BookReview #5StarReview #Lola's

Don't Call Me Kit KatDon’t Call Me Kit Kat
by K.J. Farnham
Genre: Contemporary
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: April 20, 2015

Blurb:
Junior high is where things really start to happen. Cliques form and break apart. Couples are made and destroyed. And a reputation is solidified that you won’t ever be able to escape. Everything you do and say, and everyone you spend your time with, matters.

Katie Mills knows that. She gets it. That’s why she tried so hard to get in with the cool girls at school. And why she was so devastated when those efforts found her detained for shoplifting and laughed out of cheer squad tryouts.

But Katie has more to worry about than just fitting in. Her parents are divorced and always fighting. Her sister never has time for her. And her friends all seem to be drifting apart. Even worse? The boy she has a crush on is dating the mean girl at school.

Everything is a mess, and Katie doesn’t feel like she has control over any of it. Certainly not over her weight, which has always topped out at slightly pudgier than normal—at least, according to her mother.

So when she happens to catch one of the popular girls throwing up in the bathroom one day, it sparks an idea. A match that quickly engulfs her life in flames.

Is there any going back once she gets started down this path?

And would she even want to if she could?

As all of my teen girls were too busy at this time, reading and reviewing Don't Call Me Kit Kat fell to me, the Mama. All in all, I'm still not sure how I feel about this book.
Would I have wanted my girls to read it, although it's likely nothing they don't deal with at school every day?
Would I have liked to have stuck my head in the sand and not learned anything more about bulimia and the cruelty that these kids go through regularly? Probably yes to my girls reading it and no to me being an Ostrich.
Why? It is very well written and quite realistic. Funny how some things don't change like mean girls, popularity contests and girls thinking they are overweight, even some 35 years post-high school.
Ms. Farnham did an excellent job of presenting the facts while keeping it within a storyline, a much easier and more palatable way for many people, especially teens to learn. So Kudos for a well-written book on multiple difficult subjects, one I would highly recommend to both parent and child.

Excerpt:

Every time I look up above, hoping to catch some sight of the heavens, all I see is smoke. It’s blocking out any light from the stars. There will be no relief tonight.
I notice a silhouette up ahead. It… it appears to be the minaret of a masjid. Hope is suddenly injected into my heart. With every step, the minaret breaks out of the smoke, and I can better perceive the masjid itself. I see its domed roof. It’s standing tall above all the destruction. If it’s still standing, it’ll be safe inside, right? Nobody will come into a masjid and harm us.
But then I see the entrance. The wall has collapsed in on itself. It’s been blown into a pile of rubble, completely blocking the front doors. One of the minarets has broken off and fallen straight down, smashing into the marble-tiled courtyard. The minaret lies broken and scattered, no more recognizable than any of the other ruined buildings.
As the flames of another wreckage reflect off of the minaret and masjid, I stare at it in disbelief for a long moment. I almost ask Salman and Fatima if we should try to go around the masjid and look for the women’s entrance, but they hardly even give it a glance before continuing down the broken road. And so, without a word, I follow.
We keep trudging through the darkness, not knowing what lays even twenty feet ahead of us. For a little while, I think I hear some gunfire a few streets down. It spikes up for a moment, breaking the silence. We all stop. But then it dies off… and we keep moving.
There is a slight nighttime breeze long into our journey. The wind blows through the hollow streets, but it’s barely strong enough to be felt. However, as soon as it hits me, I look up and thank Allah. Just this drop is enough to quench my thirst for a while.
A few blocks later, I think I hear some sirens not too far away. They sound like police sirens. Or maybe an ambulance’s. Salman and Fatima don’t seem to react to it. However, the noise disappears as if it was never there, just like everything else tonight. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me. We march on.
The longer and further we go, the louder the sound of silence becomes. It grips my soul like an unrelenting leech. It speaks into my heart, letting me know just how forsaken these streets have become. Is the entire city as desolate as here?

MY PET GHOST - What Do You Think Will Happen Next? by Rich Linville

"One night, I am walking in the forest and what do you think I see?" To find out, have fun reading this ghost story with a happy ending. Try to give your answers to the questions before you turn the page. Your answers can be different or the same. Have fun making up your own stories about a pet ghost.

Review:

This fun Halloween book is low on the frightening scale and high on the imagination engagement. Each page gives the listener a chance to pause the tale when they hear a certain sound and decide what THEY think they should do next. The pictures are bright, colorful and silly and as it's an audiobook, there are fun, non-scary sounds. Jo Warren's melodic voice goes throughout the book as the narrator. She makes you want to listen, giggle and smile. Perfect for littles and lovers of children's Halloween stories.

presented by Tantrum Books!
My review and the entry for the giveaway

This winter, siblings Ruairi and Dani Miller visit their ancestral homeland: the legendary Viking island of Yondersaay. Even with Granny Miller’s storytelling to pass the time, the pair manage to find trouble. In less than twenty-four hours of their arrival, Ruairi is mistaken for the lost Boy King of Denmark, kidnapped by Vikings, and scheduled to be sacrificed at sundown. Granny isn’t very pleased.

But when everyone except them goes Viking, the three turn to Granny’s epic tales of the legends of Yondersaay, The Gifts of Odin, and King Dudo the Mightily Impressive for clues. But not all stories end happily, and Ruari, Dani, and Granny will have to write their own happy ending.

The Princess Bride meets Vikings in this enchanted tale of high adventure, buried treasure, villainous treachery, violent ends, and – of course – true love. Aoife Lennon-Ritchie’s debut middle grade novel, THE EXTREMELY EPIC VIKING TALE OF YONDERSAAY, is a humorous and heartwarming story for readers ages 9+.

My Review:

Mystery and danger, adventurous and fast-paced, The Extremely Epic Viking Tale of Yondersaay was a great story that was perfectly written for someone about my age – 10 and in 5th Grade.  I loved learning more about the Vikings and their myths and legends.  I had heard some of the names like Odin and Thor and Loki before and it was exciting to hear more about them.

The story was exciting because the kids were fun and about my age.  It took me a while to practice pronouncing the brother’s name – Ruairi, Ruairi, Ruairi.  Dani and Ruairi’s Granni made me laugh.  My Grammie is kind of like her.  I liked that it wasn’t just a BOY story because girls sometimes get left out.  The author did a great job making Dani just as important as Ruairi.

I loved how much I wanted to keep reading the book.  I mean, I read and I read and I read because it was that exciting.  Sometimes there was a word or two I did not know but I could look it up or ask my mom if I could not figure it out.  The author did a really great job in my opinion.  I think both boys and girls of my age or older would really love this book and should read it.

5 STARS

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
