Book Description:

Raised in San Diego in the 1980s, Constance was born to be a Californian dreamer. The fourth of nine children in a poor, dysfunctional family, she grew up with three demons in her household: alcohol, abuse, and absence. She buried her dreams in the dark cocoon of her childhood. As a teenager, an accident upended her world and cursed her with epilepsy for the rest of her life.

Entering adulthood, Constance hoped she’d left the worst behind her. Instead, toxic relationships, misguided spiritual teachings, and close calls with death nearly broke her.

But Constance discovered curses can hide blessings in their inner layers. Instead of breaking, she chose to break free, realizing her heart could sprout wings to take her in the direction of her wildest dreams…

In a mesmerizing memoir that is by turns heartbreaking and heartwarming, writer and philanthropist Constance Grays Jones retraces her precarious journey towards truth, love, community, and self-discovery. Tackling issues of epilepsy, depression, infertility, and family drama with refreshing sass, humor, and compassion, she reminds us that we are products of our past but also the creators of our purpose. Her inspiring story is a wakeup call for the soul, showcasing the tenacity of the human spirit, the pockets of sunlight in the darkest corners, and the transformational power of belief and love.

 Excerpt:

It is remarkable how lonely you can feel even when constantly surrounded by people. It is eerie how life is dictated by luck—the luck of which family you are born into. I had friends who had stable households, loving parents, families who always made time for them, normal siblings, and access to ballet lessons, summer camp, and nice clothes. I, on the other hand, lived in the heart of chaos. I felt neglected, unseen, and forced to grow up fast. I’d tried running away a few times. I’d tried staying with my relatives for as long as I was able. I always ended up back home.
Would they even notice if I was gone? Would they even care?
I’d be one less kid to worry about. One less mouth to feed. There were so many of us anyway. And I would be free… free from the pain, neglect, emptiness… free from my returning father.
Derrick would care. I felt a pang of regret that I would leave my best friend behind. I thought about my younger sisters. Would they hate me for abandoning them as our dad had abandoned us? Would they be able to take care of themselves without me? Maybe my parents would have regrets. Maybe my mom would feel horrible for ignoring me. Maybe she would cry over my little dead body and wish she’d treated me nicer. She would tell my dad and he would feel like it was his fault. He’d have to live with the regret for his entire life.
Yes. Good. It would serve them right.
I wondered if I would go to Hell. According to the Bible, God would damn me for taking my own life. It was a sin. The fires would be hot… there would be pitchforks, torture, and demons…
My hands started to shake. I couldn’t get myself to open the bottle of pills.
Or maybe God would take pity on me. Maybe he’d take me up to Heaven so I could finally be happy. That would be a very different sort of afterlife. I envisioned blue skies and sunny fields of lush green grass, colorful flowers and refreshing rivers, beautiful smiling angels and music. I would be able to fly in Heaven, it would be a place filled with enchanting music, and I would be given everything I’d ever wanted in my life. I wouldn’t be poor. I wouldn’t cry myself to sleep at night. I wouldn’t need to live with my father ever again.
I can’t take it anymore. I can’t, I can’t, I can’t…
A knock on the door startled me. “Connie?” Andre’s voice drifted through the keyhole. “What are you doing in there?”
I paused. He had seen me go in. I’d pushed past him while I’d been crying. Had he seen the pill bottle? “None of your business!”
“Open the door!” he said.
“No!” I retorted.
“Open the door! Open it now!”
His demands and his frantic knocking incited a fresh wave of tears. The enormity of what I was about to do frightened me. His frantic awareness of it frightened me even further.
“No,” I kept saying. My hands were shaking so badly that it was difficult to get the cap off the bottle, but I finally managed. “No!” This was what I wanted, right? Yes, I told myself. This was what I needed. There couldn’t be any turning back. They won’t change, I reprimanded myself. Nothing will change. Only I can change this. It wasn’t a bad thing. I hadn’t contemplated death too much, but I hoped that it would be like swimming out of blackness and into the light, like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. Surely it would be better than all this.
I’ve wondered, since then, why so many people choose bathrooms as a suicide setting. There are many reasons to choose from, probably. Bathrooms are where pills and razors are located. They are private spaces, where other people are far less likely to interrupt you or bang down the door if they think you’re taking your sweet time flossing or grappling with constipation. Bathrooms are also easier to clean since water is in great supply. Then there’s the mirror, too, offering a final face-down and farewell.
For my fourteen-year-old self, this bathroom had become a narrow ledge at the world’s end. I teetered on the cliff between hope and despair, reeling from my never-ending exposure to a world of violence and vulnerability where no one seemed to care and no one seemed to notice. From my vantage point, there was only one way out: step off the cliff and into the void. I wasn’t sure yet if falling meant flying.

Book Review:

Amazing! This book has completely left me verklempt. I was prepared to be bored as it is a memoir yet nothing could be farther from the truth! Awe-inspiring, heart wrenching and heartfelt, I read page after page with tears streaming down my face. Constance is an amazing person who managed to find the positive in all things.  What a great example she is.  Her book is one to keep on the family bookshelf as a reminder that all things are possible.

YOU TOO? | by Various Authors, Edited by Janet Gurtler #YA #Self-Help #Teens #Parenting #MeToo #YouToo #BookReview #LolasBlogTours #NetGalley #InkyardPress

You Too banner

This is my stop during the blog tour for You Too? by Janet Gurtler and organized by Lola's Blog Tours. On my previous post, I had a special Guest Post from the author.  This time, I have reviewed it for you. The blog tour runs from 6 till 24 January. See the tour schedule here.

You TooYou Too?
Edited by Janet Gurtler
Genre: Non-fiction
Age category: Young Adult, New Adult
Release Date: January 7, 2020

Blurb:
A timely and heartfelt collection of essays inspired by the #MeToo movement, edited by acclaimed young adult and middle-grade author Janet Gurtler. Featuring Beth Revis, Mackenzi Lee, Ellen Hopkins, Saundra Mitchell, Jennifer Brown, Cheryl Rainfield and many more.

When #MeToo went viral, Janet Gurtler was among the millions of people who began to reflect on her past experiences. Things she had reluctantly accepted—male classmates groping her at recess, harassment at work—came back to her in startling clarity. She needed teens to know what she had not: that no young person should be subject to sexual assault, or made to feel unsafe, less than or degraded.

You Too? was born out of that need. By turns thoughtful and explosive, these personal stories encompass a wide range of experiences and will resonate with every reader who has wondered, “Why is this happening to me?” or secretly felt that their own mistreatment or abuse is somehow their fault—it’s not. Candid and empowering, You Too? is written for teens, but also an essential resource for the adults in their lives—an urgent, compassionate call to listen and create change.

My Review:

**WARNING: This book does contain trigger themes involving rape/incest/sexual harassment/abuse.**

You Too? is a collection of short stories and it gives us all a good dose of reality: In today's world, it is far too common that females from childhood to the teenage years, (as well as oft documented adulthood) are still objectified, and in way too many cases, abused.  As if the experiences themselves weren't nightmarish enough, the message they often receive is "It's the girl's fault", that they should feel guilty and worse yet, ashamed of themselves.

As the mom of teenage girls, this breaks my heart. I believe that all teenage girls should be given the chance to read it. The fact that this book helps to bring the issue into the light and lets the girls know that they are not alone, is the first step to handling, treating and correcting the problem.

Shades of black randomly interspersed with hues of tan and gray surrounded me as I gazed over a sea of cowboy hats at the Las Vegas airport.

After working our way through the crowd, my husband, Captain Cavedweller, and I settled at our gate to wait for our flight. While he read the newspaper and jiggled his boot-covered foot impatiently, I observed those milling around. Like us, hundreds of cowboys prepared to depart after attending the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and many of the accompanying activities.

Each December, the city of Las Vegas takes on a country vibe as the rodeo comes to town, bringing hundreds of vendors, thousands of spectators, and a whole lot of fun.

As we sat at the airport that morning, the idea for a story began churning in my head.

Since so many of the cowboys who compete professionally spend a good deal of time traveling, I began to wonder how many of them flew from one rodeo to the next. If they were flying, it made sense that they might meet a girl at an airport who turned their head.

I began jotting down notes for a story idea and by the time we reached home, The Christmas Cowboy (Rodeo Romance Series Book 1) was born.

While researching details for The Christmas Cowboy, which involves a saddle bronc rider as the hero, I became aware of a wonderful organization — the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund.

For those unfamiliar with the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, the organization provides help to injured rodeo athletes. The men and women who are professional rodeo athletes know it isn’t a matter of if they get hurt, but when. Many of them are uninsured, so when an accident happens, it can be devastating physically, emotionally, and financially.

That’s when the JCCF steps in and offers a hand up to steps in offer financial assistance to rodeo athletes who’ve sustained catastrophic injuries that leave them unable to compete for an extended time. Rather than worry about how they’ll pay their bills, they can focus on healing. One thing I especially admire about the JCCF is that 100 percent of the donations go to the cowboys who need it. They don’t take out administrative expenses or fees.

This is the sixth year for my  Read a Book, Help A Cowboy campaign that raises funds and awareness for the JCCF. Now through Christmas Eve, I will donate ten percent of the proceeds from every book purchase to the JCCF.

A wonderful addition to this year’s campaign is A Cowboy Christmas. The book features 300 pages of western holiday fun with more than 70 full-color recipes.

My Review:

This is Liberty, the ACME Mama.  The girls easily and unanimously decided that due to my undying love for all things Cowboy and Western, I should be the one to review this so I happily did so. What a beautiful book!  Shanna really outdid herself here.  The photography is breathtaking, both of the western lifestyle and environment as well as the many different ways she shared to make our Holidays Merry and Bright.  She shares some delicious recipes, decorating and table setting ideas, ways to make guests feel comfortable in your home and beautiful crafts that are doable and perfect for the Season. She has a fantastic gift-giving section for the hard to gift people all the way to great ways to wrap your packages. And it all comes with the beautiful photography, showing all you visual people out there (like me!) exactly what she's talking about.

I really enjoyed the stories from other rural families and how they keep traditions alive in this crazy world we live in.  The part that really made me get verklempt however was when Shanna shared about the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. It is such a good program.  For those not familiar with it, I shared the section here on my blog above my review so check it out.

The entire book is just extremely well done and beautiful.  I cannot stress this enough, so much so that this book is totally on my Christmas list... for me!

Ephesians 6 Devotionals to Empower and Make You Victorious in Everyday Struggles
Religious: Christian Spiritual Warfare
Publisher: Creativity Publishing

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Is spiritual warfare real? Are you aware of how you’re being attacked? Equipped takes a detailed look at God, at our enemy, and at our response.

Everyday struggles happen, but you can be victorious.

In Africa, people believe in spirit beings. Witch doctors cast spells. People dance barefoot over red-hot coals without being burned. Spiritual warfare is obvious.

In other cultures, the spiritual battle is not so evident. Still, it is very real. Homes are divided by discord and divorce. Parents are overly busy. Children are lured into drugs and sex-trafficking. Churches are complacent and powerless. Is there hope?

Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10 NIV). What's stopping you from living life to the full? Read Equipped. Become aware. Put on your spiritual armour as described in Ephesians six. Stand firm. Pray.

 Excerpt

“We can’t meet under the great tree anymore!”

“Why?”

“Because the gods are angry and they struck the tree with lightning.”

I first learned about spiritual warfare while growing up in southern Africa where my parents served as missionaries. In Africa, people believe in spirit beings. In Africa, the battle is obvious. One congregation my father served held their services under a huge tree near Shashe, Botswana. Lightning struck that tree and fear invaded. I witnessed my parents praying and calling on believers to continue to meet under that tree as a witness to unbelievers. Church services continued in the shade of the tree. No one died. No one became ill. The congregation grew.

In North America and other first world countries, the battle is not so obvious, but it is still very real.  In some ways, it is more insidious and dangerous because it is hidden. Here we battle against conforming to the norms of a society that scoffs at God and the Bible. In our personal lives, we are lulled into just drifting along in our spiritual life instead of guarding our hearts and minds and standing firm in God’s truth. Our homes are too often divided by divorce, our churches powerless in complacency.

In the greatest story ever told, the plot is good versus evil. We live in a world where people often focus only on the physical—what we can touch or taste. But there is another dimension that is very real, the spiritual dimension. God is real, and so is Satan. We are in a spiritual battle, whether we acknowledge it or not. Denying gravity exists doesn’t nullify the effects of gravity. So too, denying spiritual conflict doesn’t make it disappear. The only choice we have is whether we follow God into battle or not. In John 10:10 Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

God has provided information on spiritual warfare in his Word, the Bible. We don’t have to enter the battle groping around like blind men. God provides weapons, fights the battle for us, and even lets us know how it is all going to end. We can read the last chapter of the story about life on this earth and know without a doubt that God wins (Revelation 20, 21). That doesn’t mean we should sit back and do nothing. The number of casualties in this war—people who reject God and face eternity without Him—can be reduced if you and I obey God.

In Matthew 17 we read about a father who brought his son to Jesus’ disciples because the son had seizures and often fell into fire or water. The disciples were unable to help. We are told in verse 18 that “Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.” Jesus goes on to tell the disciples that they were not able to help the boy because of their lack of faith.

I present these devotionals to you as a fellow pilgrim. Every day is a new battle. I try to start each day with Bible reading and prayer. However, I still fail. Often, I need to repent, confess my sin, then get up and put my armour on before I carry on. I’m thankful that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Romans 8:35, 37-39)!

Perhaps our world is in the condition it is in because WE lack faith and fail to obey. What if everyone who says they believe in Jesus were to read and study the Bible? What if we all chose to live in obedience to what the Bible says? What if we trusted God to work in us and through us to do the impossible? What if we put on the spiritual armour God has provided and stood against the Devil and his hosts? What if we prayed under the guidance of the Holy Spirit?

Satan knows the end of the story too. When Jesus Christ died and rose again, he defeated Satan. Satan knows he cannot win the war, but he is working at winning skirmishes. The Evil One is out to destroy families, to break up marriages, and to lead people into addictions that destroy them.

You will find there is a lot of material to absorb. I encourage you to take your time reading and studying the material. Whether you read a devotional a day, or a devotional every week, take it at your own pace. Before you read, stop and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what He wants to say to you. Then read with your Bible in hand, looking up and reading Scripture as you go. Each chapter has an example of how God can help you be victorious in everyday struggles. Each one ends with a question for reflection. If you like to journal, reflect and write about what you are learning. Perhaps you are an artistic person and prefer to paint or draw a picture, in response. This study is between you and God, so respond in a way that is meaningful to you. (If you’d like to share your responses, ask questions, or join me in prayer, you’re invited to my closed Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/EquippedForVictory/; Use #EquippedForVictory on social media to connect with others. In this devotional, I use Ephesians 6:10-20 as a framework, many other supporting Scriptures included to add to our understanding, along with examples from my everyday life. The first few devotionals focus attention on our great God, our foundation when participating in spiritual warfare. Then we learn about our enemy. Next, we think about our responses and our armor. The last section deals with prayer. In the Appendix section, you will find additional information and resources for further help and study.

The choice is ours. We can continue on in complacency, pretending there is no battle. Or, we can put on the armour God provides and be victorious. I pray that this book will present a clear, balanced overview of spiritual warfare that will inform, equip, and motivate us all as Prince and Princess Warriors of the King of Kings.

Let’s encourage and support each other as we continue to learn to be effective warriors.
