Evil spirits have begun arriving in Sean's small suburban hometown. The ghost of his Grandmother tells him it is up to him to stop them. To help him in this struggle she gives him a Celtic Cross necklace handed down through the generations that open hidden doors, and a pet rattlesnake. Also, his middle-school classmates - Aaron, Tammy, Maeve, and the twins Sam and the Sham - rally around him. But as more and more evil spirits gather Sean will need much more help than this to stop the destruction of not only his family but also his school and all of Shadytown. His Grandmother says help is coming But she is only a ghost stuck in a bog. Sean feels completely overwhelmed. And that's before he even confronts the demonic tree in the field behind his house.

10 Things I Didn't Know About Becoming a Published Author

This blog could be split into 2 separate blogs by inserting the words 'good' and 'bad' between '10' and 'Things'. Since it wasn't, I'll do that myself and list 5 of each. Whenever a good news-bad news joke gets told, the good news is told first. Since this isn't a joke, I don't feel compelled to follow that formula. So here are 5 bad things:
            1.  I am not comfortable making personal appearances. I am much more comfortable sitting at a keyboard in front of a computer screen on my desk in my basement office. I'd rather converse with the characters in my head than with flesh and blood beings.
            2.  I am not comfortable putting myself out there. I'd rather be writing my next book than writing this.
            3.  I do not have the temperament for sales. I tried that once long ago going door to door trying to sell home fire alarms. I didn't sell a one, earned not a penny for my troubles, and felt humiliated begging to get back the job I quit in order to do this.
            4.  I didn't know this would be so hard or take so long. I have been at this since my pre-teen years when I wrote poetry, then song lyrics, then a record review column, then short stories, then novels, then stage plays, then a web site, then screenplays, then more short stories, then more novels, then novellas, then a travel blog. Just remembering all that effort makes me tired.
            5.  The time writing takes away from other endeavors. I have compensated all my life by sleeping less so I could get up early in the morning to write. That meant I usually got 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night most of my life. Since I have retired I now get 6 to 7 hours a night. That's quite an improvement.
Now comes the good part - 5 good things:
            1.  I LOVE DOING THIS! There is no other thing I would rather invest my time in. I feel more alive crafting a story than at any other time. The only thing that comes close is when I'm hiking through the wilderness up a mountain along a beautiful stream to see an incredible waterfall. Nothing else touches this.
            2.  The sense of achievement when something I have written is published, be it in digital format or in print on actual paper. Sometimes I just sit and stare at the covers of the magazines, anthologies, and books that contain my stories.
            3.  Meeting other writers. I can talk politics with my political friends and talk sports with my sports friends, but I get really enthused talking writing with my writing friends.
            4.  How much I have learned. I enjoy doing research for my stories. With the Internet, this has become much easier. No more trips to the library or digging through encyclopedias (for younger readers, imagine Google printed out on paper). For example, I wanted to come up with some activity that could be done in a bog. I came across an article about moth walks. I had never heard of such a thing before (they are much more popular in Europe than here - I learned that in my research). I have never had the opportunity to go on one. But from reading accounts of moth walks people (mostly Europeans) have posted online, I got a general sense of how they went. So I put a moth walk in the part of my novel 'Shadytown' that took place in Cedar Bog (which by the way is a real place in Ohio).
            5.  How much hope is involved. It's easy, so I'm told, for people my age to endlessly mull over the past and yearn for younger days. Not me. I'm always looking forward for the next story to tell or the next book to be published. I'm always hoping for more.
Although the list is split evenly, the good greatly outweighs the bad. And the bad is getting better. I recently set up a book launch event for my new MG novel 'Shadytown'. Didn't hurt a bit, and I kind of liked the people I met. I'm looking forward to it and meeting I hope a lot more people.

book blurb

Arden St John – teenager, witch and embodiment of chaos - is back.

The new school year starts with her surrounded by friends and her boyfriend, Nick, all of them happy and out from under the shadow of Georgia, who now lurks on the edges, friendless and powerless.

But there is something in the shadows. It is looking for Arden and it’s not the only one.

There are many who want to use Arden, some of them more dangerous than the vampires who want her life.

Even those protecting her want something from her, more than she is willing to give.

Still determined to stop the vampires’ trade, Arden had to choose between staying safe or embracing her terrifying power. When she finally unleashes the darkness within her, the consequences are more than she could imagine.

As more secrets are revealed, a price must be paid for the truth. Powerful but vulnerable, Arden must suffer through betrayal, love and acceptance as her story continues.

excerpt

Buzzing with a high from the concert, Arden and Nick walked slowly back to his car. Pulling on their joined hands, Nick tugged her into the gap between two buildings.
“Finally I get you alone,” he whispered against her lips.
“Oh no! What are you going to do now?” Arden wailed jokingly, walking backwards.
“Hmm…you’re at my mercy, so anything I want. Mwah, ha, ha, ha.” Nick smiled as he kissed her softly. Their lips met lightly, again and again, as their breath sped up.
“We should get going. It’s a long drive back and it’s already late,” Arden murmured, but made no move to disentangle herself.
“Yeah,” Nick mumbled, backing her up against the wall, holding their twined fingers against the bricks as he kissed her again and pressed their bodies together.
Lost in each other, the heightened sensation of skin against skin, they failed to notice stealthy movement behind them.
Like a sudden shout in her ear, Arden reacted instinctively. Spinning them, she moved in front of Nick before she consciously knew what she was doing. Facing down the dark alley before her, heart beating fast, she searched frantically for the danger. The alley looked empty. She strained her eyes, opening them until they ached, trying to see into the dark areas. Processing as fast as she could, it seemed like just an empty alley. Her instincts were screaming but she couldn’t find what was wrong. Breathing in and out, she waited, arms holding Nick back.
“Arden?” he asked and started to move around her.
“Hush,” she whispered, ushering him back towards the entrance. “There’s something here.” “Where?”
“I’m not sure.”
“I can’t see anything.”
Body pumping with adrenaline, Arden stared down the still and silent alley. Was there anything? She started to second guess herself. But a sixth sense inside her was pounding, even though all she could see was an empty stretch of concrete and dirty brick walls. She started to turn away, but out of the corner of her eye she caught a flicker of movement. Eyes narrowing like a bird of prey, she saw a shadow move, covering a patch of light. Then more shadows rearranged themselves, seeming to move in a disjointed wave. The dark patches poured slowly and inexorably down the alley, pooling in places on the cracked concrete, pausing as it amassed into one dark pool. The light shining into the alley hadn’t changed, yet the shadow was steadily closing the distance between them. Pushing Nick backwards, Arden tried to move them away. She anticipated it rushing them, but whatever the shadows were, they kept pace with them as they moved. Stalking them.
Instinctively, Arden tried to gather her power, but of course, there was nothing there. The earrings prevented it. Fear welled up, making her wish desperately that she still had power to protect them. There was only one thing she could do. Reaching up to her ears, she started fumbling, trying to unscrew them.
“Arden, no!” Nick exclaimed trying to stop her hands. Realising they didn’t have time anyway, Arden moved them faster.
“Nick, go!” She pushed him away from her, giving him a head start as she kept stepping backwards faster. They stumbled towards the street, Arden holding her arms out ready to defend them, even though she had no idea what she was protecting them from.
The shadows started moving faster, the light in the alley undulating like they were underwater. Spinning, Arden gave into the primal urge to run. Adrenaline squealed through her body as the flight instinct took over. Feet pounding, she hurried after Nick, waiting for the first touch of the shadows. Would it burn or freeze?
Catching up with Nick, who must have slowed for her, Arden pushed him hard and they stumbled as light broke over them. Realizing they were on the street, Arden barely slowed, grabbing his arm and making him sprint away from the alley.
“What are you doing?” he asked after two blocks, holding onto her hand to slow them down.
“Didn’t you see the shadows?” Arden panted, looking over her shoulder. Nothing seemed to be following them and the danger she had felt had lessened. Searching the deserted street around them, nothing appeared out of the ordinary.
“Umm…there were shadows but it’s night, so that’s normal,” he answered slowly and carefully, not understanding.
“The shadows weren’t just shadows.”
“They weren’t?” Nick’s brows scrunched in confusion.
“No.” Arden shook her head.
“Okay. What were they?”
Rubbing her arms to get rid of a sudden chill, Arden kept looking around for danger. “I don’t know. But they weren’t good.”
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but are you sure?” Arden levelled him with a stare.
“After everything that happened last year, you doubt me?”
“No. Sorry, I just didn’t…”
“It’s fine. But when it comes to the weird stuff, just believe me and if I tell you to run, run as fast as you can.”
“Sure. Will do.” He nodded, grabbing her hand in his as they walked. “So you have no idea what was in the alley?”
“No, but it was bad. Sticking around to find out wasn’t going to end well.”
“So what are we going to do about it?”
“Us?” Arden shrugged attempting to dislodge the tightness in her shoulders. She couldn’t help glancing back in the direction of the alley. “Nothing, I don’t think. Whatever that is, it has nothing to do with us.”
“Okay. Well, let’s get going then.” He led them back in the direction of the car.
“Good idea.” Arden tried to dismiss the feeling of foreboding, but it clung to her, dampening her mood.

My Review:

The Blessed Knights was, simply put, one of the most amazing books I think I’ve ever read.  It was profound and an adventure as well as a suspenseful mystery of sorts yet at the same time emotion filled, heart-wrenching and humbling too.  I love stories involving angels and The Knights Templar so this more than fits the bill.  The Knights were kept very busy as they were in search of Eli and they filled the story with intrigue, action and honor.  I tell you, Ms. Ting is just an outstanding author! Once I picked this book up, I never wanted to put it down. I am so very glad this is a series.  Now this is a standalone book but you will enjoy it so much more if you read the other two Angel Knights first.   So do yourself a favor and arrange to be able to read The Angel Knights Series and specifically The Blessed Knights. You too will then be able to appreciate this writing and Ms. Ting’s considerable talent.

*****5 Stars*****

Teaser of THE BLESSED KNIGHTS (The Angel Knights Book 3) by Mary Ting:

Ikelia leaned back against the door and looked at her fingernails as if she was bored while the other hand stroked the dagger on her belt. “What do you want, Vince? Why bother to come? You know how this will go. You’ll try to capture me, but I’ll humiliate you by kicking you out. Run along to Cyrus and tell him you couldn’t find me, and maybe he won’t butcher you.”
Vince hissed and whipped out his sword, and in a flash he was in front of her. Pointing the tip on Ikelia’s neck, he said, “Don’t mock me, little witch.” He lowered his gaze and the sword. “No necklace this time? What a pity.” He clucked his tongue and raised his hand to show her the same sunburst necklace Eli had around his neck.
Ikelia shoved the sword out of the way and paced toward the broken glass. “You can keep it. It won’t protect you, and it certainly won’t harm me. Besides, you don’t know the spell. You weren’t worthy to have one passed down to you. What a shame. It’s quite useful when you know how to use one.”
After she walked in a complete circle, she bent down on her knees and placed her hands a few inches off the pile of shards. At her mumbled words, blue, red, gold, and green pieces lifted in the air and pressed together, forming a beautiful three-feet-tall vase I had seen earlier on top of a small wooden table. The item had glued itself back together.
“There.” Ikelia clapped her hands two times and strode toward the door. “Good as new.” She smirked. “It’s like you were never here. Your magic is no match for mine. You’re in my domain. Don’t forget that. And I believe you have something that is mine.” She wiggled her index finger. The sunburst necklace Vince held flew into her hands and coiled around her neck.
Vince’s eyes darkened. He trembled with rage, ready to pounce on her, but instead raised his arm toward the glass cases.
The top of one of the glass cases shattered outward, and glass splinters blasted in the air. From inside the case, a small dagger flew toward her as he threw the one from his belt.
I gasped, and then held the breath. Had she seen the second dagger coming for her? I twitched, ready to bolt to her rescue, even though I knew I shouldn’t, but Father pressed his hand on my shoulder, firm and strong. He knew me too well. I had failed Eli, and I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing for his mother. I had enough guilt as it was; I didn’t want to add more.
The first dagger stopped inches from the spot between her eyes, but the second one nicked her leg and dropped to the ground with a loud clang. Blood soaked the dark fabric, but she made no sound. I was pretty sure she didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of hurting her.
“Are you bleeding? Pity, I guess you can’t handle more than one at a time. You’ve been warned, but you can surrender anytime.”
Vince raised his hand again. Five daggers bolted from under his cloak fast as lightning. They jabbed her cape and pinned her against the wooden door, two daggers on each side and one between her legs, while some sort of darkness swirled around her. Magic light, only visible to supernatural beings.
“Well, well, well, what will Cyrus think of me now? I think he’ll butcher you instead of me. What do you think?” He took a step toward her with each word. Caressing her cheek, he spoke again. “It’s too bad we’re not on the same side, precious witch. Such a waste of a pretty thing. Now my eyes will be sore from missing your beautiful face. There aren’t many beautiful things that hold my attention in this world.”
“Shut up. Let me go,” Ikelia spat, wiggling herself to set free.
Vince pushed back. “Don’t even bother. Don’t you know about my special daggers? No magic can break my spell.”
Ikelia’s lips spread wide in a smug grin, like she had something up her sleeve, but she did nothing nor said nothing to break the daggers’ spell. “Don’t worry, Vince. You know I always have something handy, even if it isn’t on me.”
Vince whipped his head toward the wall, straight at us. Could he see us? Impossible. Father shielded us. Raising his chin, his nose twitched, like a dog sniffing the air. “I was right. You do have a human—not one, but two?” He beamed a mischievous grin. “Stay right there.” He didn’t look at her, but instead placed his palms flat against the wall just feet from where we looked through. “I feel so much energy coming through the wall. Perhaps someone or some beings are spying on us.”
I stiffened and held my breath as he tapped the wall. Ikelia watched with narrowed, daggered eyes.
“There’s nothing there, idiot. Touch the wall all you wish.” Ikelia scoffed.
“Release the wall, Ikelia, or I’ll hurt you more,” he threatened, eyes cold and unyielding.
Everyone inch of me begged her to do it, only because I had no idea what torture Vince would inflict on her. I already knew she wouldn’t die. Vince had said he was to take her to Cyrus, and I had watched her die when Eli and I astral walked to the day of her death. But then I thought of Jacques and Geoffroi. What took Vince so long to figure out humans were on the other side? Did they come out of the barrels? Oh please, let me be wrong.
When she didn’t answer, a smaller dagger flew out from the glass case and dug into Ikelia’s leg, the same spot she had been nicked earlier. Her body curled inward, but the restraints held her in place. Her face blanched and eyes rolled back, but she didn’t make a sound.
“Release the barrier, Ikelia,” Vince demanded, his tone harder and colder.
When she did nothing again, the dagger twisted, digging into her flesh. That time, she cried out. She must have released the shield unwillingly for Vince to curl his lips to his ears.
“That’s a good girl,” he cooed. “I think I’ll have fun with your pets.” He winked at her, and one of his feet slipped right through the wall.
I panicked. We had to help Jacques and Geoffroi. But before I could mutter a word, Ikelia closed her eyes, and then shot her eyes open toward the clock. The pendulum stopped ticking, frozen in place. As if the clock held the power of time and space inside the store, everything stilled, even Vince, who was almost through to the other side. One heel stuck out.

Excerpt:

They could hear the deep breaths of the dragon as it passed by the shed. They crouched motionless under the window with their backs pressed against the wall. Not only did they hear it sniffing the ground and the walls, but that familiar methane smell was overwhelming. It rounded the side and approached the woodshed doors.
Buzz mouthed a jumbled Hail Mary while attempting, but failing to make the sign of the cross.
A loud screech in the distance startled them out of their silent formation and Buzz’s haphazard prayer. The dragon pushed off the ground with its massive legs and flew away, back in the direction of the enormous mountain they had seen from the top of the knoll. It turned back once to circle the shed; then as quickly as it arrived, it vanished into the horizon behind the trees.
