Book Description:

Niels Poulsen, self-styled God of Rock and lead singer in a popular punk band, has everything he could want: family, friends, fortune, and fame. When his best friend and fellow band member, Jace, goes missing, Niels will do anything to get him home safe.

Niels discovers that their money and connections won’t help them on their journey. They will rely on a model airplane, a family secret, and a tangled magic that weaves the band into the fabric of other realms so tightly they may never make it home again. Their quest takes them across new worlds, through foreign dangers, and straight into the path of an ancient prophecy that wants Niels for itself.

If Niels and his friends survive long enough to find Jace and negotiate their way home to Manhattan, will it be worth the price? The magic says one of them will have to die…

Excerpt:

       As they walked away from the sketchy people, Niels leaned down close to Hattie’s face. “The liquor stall? Or do you think it’s a setup? Christ.” He leaned away. “I’m as paranoid as Rhyss now.”
       “No you’re not.” She side-hugged him as they walked. “I’ve got a bad feeling too.”
       “They pointed that way,” he gestured, “so let’s go this way.”
       “Good idea.”
       They passed several stalls. One had all kinds of colorful eggs on display. Another had a row of kids dancing in front with a sign that read: Ontriss Academy of Noc Thui. Another stall had fried dough smothered in cinnamon.
       Niels’ stomach rumbled again.
       They should’ve begged Kenzie for some money before she left, but Niels had the feeling she didn’t have much in the way of funds. Land pirates were still pirates, after all.
       Something just ahead of them started screeching.
       Places to go: not in that direction. Whatever was up there probably ate people. Niels steered them casually toward a stall with jewelry, but Hattie was having none of being steered around.
       “What is that?” She moved towards the keening, cutting off a pissy guy with a cart full of vegetables. Some of the food toppled off the cart.
       Niels almost reached for one, but two thoughts stopped him: One, he had no idea whether they were even edible; two, Kenzie said they executed thieves, and this didn’t feel like a good day for that. Dying wasn’t on his agenda.
       He let Hattie pull him across the road on her quest for death-by-screech, until they were in sight of the screeching thing.
“Is that a dragon?” Niels asked.
Holy shit.
Not just a dragon, but...a dragon. It was about the size of a teacup, or a gerbil maybe because teacups didn’t have tails, and this dragon did. It was covered with spines and opalescent scales in every pastel color of the rainbow.
Even though it wasn’t as big as the other dragons they’d seen in Sylem, it made the most god awful noise to make up for its size. Niels was tempted to screech back at it, see how it liked that. Or bring his guitar and climb into the higher notes, with an amp.
When the dragon saw Niels, it screeched even louder, rattling the side of its cage so violently Niels thought it might knock itself off the table.
“It wants you,” Hattie said.
No it didn’t. Clearly it wanted out so it could attack him. While that technically counted as wanting him it wasn’t the good thing Hattie’s tone made it out to be.
He stopped freaking out. What had he just said to himself? He needed to trust that Hattie was often more right than he was about shit.
He finished crossing the road with her and didn’t stop her when she asked, “Can we look at that dragon?”
The stall owner, a beefy guy who would have been a butcher - or a Mafioso, which amounted to the same thing - in any decent, clichéd movie, frowned at them. “You spoiled my dragon.”
He lifted the latch on the cage door and the little rainbow-tiled monster shot out of the cage, directly at Niels.
Niels backed away. He couldn’t die yet. He still had songs to write, Hattie to date, his mom to annoy…
The dragon landed on his shoulder, chirped once, and let out a huff of steam that condensed into beads of water on Niels' neck.
Okay, so not dying today. Not yet, anyway.
Niels allowed himself to breathe.
The dragon was kind of cute if he ignored its claws digging into his shoulder through his shirt.
“That’s three hundred Angmol.”
Oh yeah, Niels could just pull that out of his ass.
“We don’t have three hundred those things,” Hattie said.
“Or one,” Niels muttered so only she could hear. She laughed.

About the Authors:

Holly began her career as an accountant. While her sense of humor tends appropriately dry, her love for writing far exceeds the constraints of an office job. She attended four colleges across three states in pursuit of her BS in Accounting, while taking extra courses in philosophy, law, and writing. Between words, she spends her time immersing herself in the magic of life.

Krissy lives in a chaos factory, which is run by a merciless team of miniature humans and their pets. She enjoys music, foreign languages, noise-cancelling headphones, and the smell of fresh-mowed grass. She has a useless degree in Physics and part of another useless degree in Nursing, neither of which helped in the creation of this book.

THE FRIGHTS OF FIJI
Alyssa McCarthy's Magical Missions: Book 1
by Sunayna Prasad
Published: Oct. 20, 2018
Pages: 136
Genre: Coming of Age/Middle-Grade Adventure

BLURB:

A world of magic and adventure awaits…

Sent to live with her strict, aloof, and uncaring uncle after her parents are killed in a car accident, twelve-year-old orphan Alyssa McCarthy longs for the life she used to have—one filled with fun and love. Then one stormy night, a message appears in the raindrops on the window that will change everything.

"Your life will never be the same again, as magic will interfere."

Before long, Alyssa is kidnapped by Master Beau, a banished sorcerer with a mysterious connection to her who can only regain his power by weakening hers. Suddenly hurled into a world of wizardry filled with fantastical beasts and marvelous technology beyond her wildest imagination, Alyssa must defeat Master Beau if she ever wants to get home again. But Master Beau will stop at nothing, including using Alyssa’s friends, to ensure he is triumphant.

Originally titled "From Frights to Flaws", this story is the exciting and enchanting first book in the "Magical Missions" series.

EXCERPT:

The raindrops darkened into black, looking as if ink fell from the sky. Alyssa leaned closer to them. She squinted to determine the shapes they formed on the kitchen window… letters.

No! That couldn’t happen. Yet, a message spelled out as more pigments plopped onto the glass. Alyssa gasped at what it said.

Your life will never be the same again, Alyssa McCarthy, as magic will interfere.

What? Magic didn’t exist—at least that’d been what others had told her when she was little. No one on Orion Street could possess enchanted abilities.

Alyssa had lived here since she’d lost her parents in that car crash five years ago. She’d only been seven then. How would she tell her uncle, Bruce, about this? He’d consider her crazy. He’d already toughened up his attitude and rules. So he might consider it an excuse to escape this house.

Although Alyssa’s parents had designated her godfather as the first priority guardian, Uncle Bruce forbade her to try and contact him. He’d hidden the phone number and other information about him.

Since Alyssa’s aunt, Laura had died three years ago, Uncle Bruce had required fun to be earned. And that took more effort than Alyssa could often accomplish.

Turning around, she spotted her babysitter, Mrs. Hutchinson, examining the kitchen floor. Alyssa’s eleven-year-old cousin, Hailey, watched the progress. Hailey had mopped the floor. Would she earn a break now? Ever since her uncle, Bruce, had hired Mrs. Hutchinson, Mrs. Hutchinson had admired the way Hailey had done her chores more than Alyssa.

“Hailey, you can take a break until your next chore,” said Mrs. Hutchinson. “Alyssa, get back to work. You’ve been staring at the rain for too long.”

“Okay.” Alyssa turned back—only to see the message gone and the rain back to its
normal transparency.

“What did I say?” asked Mrs. Hutchinson.

Alyssa sighed. “Fine, I’ll finish washing the dishes.”

MY REVIEW:

I loved this awesome book! I would totally recommend it for tweens! It's about a girl named Alyssa who discovers magic.  Her parents had died when she was young and she had to live with her relatives who she thought were mean. While she had to wait for the legal system to process her being able to go live with her Godfather, she gets kidnapped by a magical villain and taken to Fiji.

The story involves lots of twists and turns and is super creative. They do talk about death some and even plotting a death so decide if you are up for that before you read it. But if you love fantasy and magic as I do then I'd truly recommend this book.  It's a quick and fun book to read!

Publication:  DECEMBER 1, 2019
Length:  335 pages
Genre(s):  Coming of Age, Young Adult

Queen Samantha’s spirit brightens as the festival of renewal approaches. The Ancient Evil that drained life from the land has been destroyed, and life is returning to the joined kingdoms. The birth of her heir gives her even more reason to celebrate. But a coup orchestrated by the unlikely alliance between a freedom-loving count and a fanatical church shatters both her plans and the ancient throne itself.

With her infant daughter missing and death and destruction spreading, Samantha finds herself faced with an impossible choice: save her daughter or her people. Already torn between a mother’s love and her duties as a queen, Samantha learns that an even greater danger threatens: the goddess herself is fading. What sacrifices will Samantha have to make to stop an evil god from taking Sulis’s place?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AUTHOR INTERVIEW :
1.      Tell us about your series in 280 characters or less (like a tweet on Twitter).
You are cruel. I can’t tell in a story in under 100.000 words. Here’s my best shot.
They see themselves as the mad princess and the demon peasant. But the Goddess has chosen them to rule. As the court and the church unite against them, they discover the Goddess has a task for them far more daunting than saving a crown. Only they can prevent the coming cataclysm.
2.       What was the most difficult thing about this story?
Getting Samantha’s character right. Robrek, the male main character, is essentially the same as I first envisioned him, but Samantha gave me endless trouble. In “The Princess and the Glass Hill,” the fairy tale that inspired the first book in The Kronicles of Korthlundia, the princess is unnamed. She has no personality and isn’t even described physically. She is nothing more than a prize to be handed off to the victorious male. One of the most important things to me in writing The Goddess’s Choice was to change that. I wanted my princess to be as strong, powerful, and interesting as the male character. I wanted her to be his heroic equal. But in attempting to accomplish this, the Samantha of my early drafts became a feminist caricature. She was generic “strong woman,” flat and uninteresting. All real people are flawed, even the best of us. I needed to find a way to keep her strong at the core, but flesh her out as a flawed, and therefore, real person. I don’t know how many revisions I had to go through before I was happy with her. In the final version, Samantha is a character that my previous readers have loved. She is no damsel in distress, but she struggles to become the woman she needs to be. Curiously, Samantha has continued to give me trouble in the later volumes in the series. I’m pleased with what she has become, but it was no easy task getting her there.
3. What surprised you about your series?
I think the most surprising thing about writing to me is that the things that I don’t plan, the things that just come to me as I’m writing end up being the most powerful parts of my novels. In particular in The Shattered Throne, Samantha learns a surprise about the goddess (no spoilers as to what the surprise is). Truth be told, I was surprised to learn it as well. I hadn’t thought to include this idea in the book, but the goddess spoke to me, and let me know how to write her story. It is that exact thing that makes the novel what it is.
4. Did the characters “talk” to you? If so, how?
Yes, I believe when you create truly deep characters, they come to life in a way, at least mine do. I’ll have an idea in my mind for a scene and try to write it the way I’ve envisioned it, but one of my characters will object, saying in effect, “I’d never do that. This is what I’d do instead.” They take over and speak through my fingers. When I allow them to do so, the results are almost always magical. When I try to reign them in and reassert control, the life drains out of the book. I’ve learned that my characters know their own story better than I do.
5. Think Fast: Dark or Light Chocolate?
Light. Absolutely light.
6. What’s next for you?
I’m presently working on the fourth novel in The Kronicles of Korthlundia, which I believe will complete the series. It doesn’t have a title yet, but I call it the dragon book. I wonder what kind of creature it may introduce into my world. I also have ideas for at least two other side novels involving characters from the series. Eventually, I also want to get back to the other series I started with The Bull Riding Witch and finish that story.
EXCERPT:
As The Ghost entered Ares’s temple, an oppressive presence settled over him. He seemed to be alone in the huge sanctuary, but he knew the acolytes of Ares watched through hidden panels. Rumors claimed they waited for someone with signs of weakness to enter. Then they would pour forth, seize the unfortunate, and sacrifice him to their god. The Ghost had found no evidence to support such rumors, but he knew that animals and criminals were regularly sacrificed on Ares’s altar, bleeding out their lives into the bowl at the foot of his statue. It was a hard death, both the blood and the pain feeding the magic of Ares’s priests. The Ghost knelt at Ares’s feet, where the stench of blood was nearly overpowering. The altar was stained with it, and the bowl at the god’s feet was full from a fresh sacrifice. The power present in this place was undeniable—dark and forbidding, far from the peace and serenity in Sulis’s temples. But he was no longer worthy of Sulis’s blessing. The Ghost drew his dagger, held his left forearm over the sacrificial bowl, and sliced a new cut alongside his numerous scars. As he bled into the bowl, he felt the magic of the place coalesce around him. His blood sizzled as it hit the bowl, and the wound on his arm healed instantly, signaling that The Ghost truly belonged to the Saloynan god.
 AUTHOR Bio and Links: Jamie began writing stories about the man from Mars when she was six, and she never remembers wanting to be anything other than a writer. Everyone told her she needed a back up plan, so she pursued a Ph.D. in American literature, which she received in 1998. She started teaching writing and literature at Auburn University. One day in the midst of writing a piece of literary criticism, she realized she’d put her true passion on the backburner and neglected her muse. The literary article went into the trash, and she began the book that was to become The Goddess’s Choice, which was published in April 2012. Her other novels include The Soul Stone, The Ghost in Exile, The Shattered Throne, and The Bull Riding Witch. In addition, she has published a novella, Demons in the Big Easy, and a collection of short stories, Blood Cursed and Other Tales of the Fantastic. Her short fiction has also appeared in the anthologies Urban Fantasy, Of Dragons & Magic: Tales of the Lost Worlds, and Waiting for a Kiss. She claims she writes about the fantastic . . . and the tortured soul. Her poor characters have hard lives. She lives in Auburn, Alabama, with her husband and five cats, which (or so she’s been told) officially makes her a cat lady. She still teaches writing and literature at Auburn University. She is the mother of a grown son.
Don't Call Me Kit KatDon’t Call Me Kit Kat
by K.J. Farnham
Genre: Contemporary
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: April 20, 2015
Blurb:
Junior high is where things really start to happen. Cliques form and break apart. Couples are made and destroyed. And a reputation is solidified that you won’t ever be able to escape. Everything you do and say, and everyone you spend your time with, matters.
Katie Mills knows that. She gets it. That’s why she tried so hard to get in with the cool girls at school. And why she was so devastated when those efforts found her detained for shoplifting and laughed out of cheer squad tryouts.
But Katie has more to worry about than just fitting in. Her parents are divorced and always fighting. Her sister never has time for her. And her friends all seem to be drifting apart. Even worse? The boy she has a crush on is dating the mean girl at school.
Everything is a mess, and Katie doesn’t feel like she has control over any of it. Certainly not over her weight, which has always topped out at slightly pudgier than normal—at least, according to her mother.
So when she happens to catch one of the popular girls throwing up in the bathroom one day, it sparks an idea. A match that quickly engulfs her life in flames.
Is there any going back once she gets started down this path?
And would she even want to if she could?
As all of my teen girls were too busy at this time, reading and reviewing Don't Call Me Kit Kat fell to me, the Mama. All in all, I'm still not sure how I feel about this book.
Would I have wanted my girls to read it, although it's likely nothing they don't deal with at school every day?
Would I have liked to have stuck my head in the sand and not learned anything more about bulimia and the cruelty that these kids go through regularly? Probably yes to my girls reading it and no to me being an Ostrich.
Why? It is very well written and quite realistic. Funny how some things don't change like mean girls, popularity contests and girls thinking they are overweight, even some 35 years post-high school.
Ms. Farnham did an excellent job of presenting the facts while keeping it within a storyline, a much easier and more palatable way for many people, especially teens to learn. So Kudos for a well-written book on multiple difficult subjects, one I would highly recommend to both parent and child.
Welcome to my stop on the excerpt tour for In Between Days by Anne Jamison.  This tour was organized by Goddess Fish Promotions.  Here on my stop, I have an exclusive excerpt for y'all as well as the tour-wide giveaway, which is for a chance to win a $25 Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift card.  Pretty cool, right?  Be sure to follow the rest of the tour for more exclusive excerpts and opportunities to enter the giveaway.  Have fun and enjoy!
In Between Days
Author:  Anne Jamison
Publication:  September 11, 2019
Length:  330 pages
Genre(s):  Coming of Age, Young Adult
Chicago suburbs, 1985. The high school. The mall. The blood-stained Mercedes. Misogyny. Homophobia. Class warfare. Cocaine.
(And the first semester isn’t even over yet.)
The Jocks with their pastel Izods. The Barbies. The loser Burnouts.
High school in the 1980's had rules. Barbies and Jocks can mix. Barbie cheerleaders steer clear of the losers. Punks want to burn it all down.
Samantha Ward doesn't love the rules, but she plays to win. So when a snarky Burnout goes after her in a face-off, of course, she fights back. Of course, she fights mean. She may not get his sex joke, but she knows he made one. About her. In front of the entire cafeteria. And what's worse, she feels a tingle when she looks at bad-boy Jason.
How could she know her mean girl put-down would launch a war? Or that the school she knows hides a darker world she never even dreamed of?
In Between Days is a pitch-perfect story of first love, friendship, and enemies; of loyalty, betrayal, and the power of secrets. This darkly funny, suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of The Outsiders and The Breakfast Club.
"GRIPPING AND UNPUTDOWNABLE." --Christina Lauren, international bestselling authors of Dating You/Hating You “THIS WAS a bittersweet tumble into eighties high school nostalgia, with all the angst, sexual tension and emotional confusion involved with first love, and so well done it was a non-stop read to the end.… (Oh, and one of the best first kisses I have EVER read...),” says one reviewer
Author's Note:
This is a historical novel that contains period language that is, and was then, and should be, offensive.
EXCERPTS (Exclusive Excerpt):
Jason had his algebra book open to appease the detention supervisor, but his mind wasn’t on algebra. It wasn’t even on lunch—which had been all kinds of entertaining—or the hallway, which had been something, he wasn’t sure what. Jason’s mind was on history class. More specifically, on what bug specifically had crawled up Mr. Diangelo’s ass.
No one thought it was Jason's knife. Even JAP Barbie, the friend of that Samantha girl who’d been turning up like a bad penny all day, even she swore Jason hadn’t been anywhere near the desk when the knife had shown up.
Stagnita, of course, had been pleased as hell to think it was Jason’s knife from the second he got Diangelo’s panicked call. It had been so good for him, he’d probably be having wet dreams on it for weeks. But even Stagnita knew it was bullshit now, or Jason would have been suspended or expelled instead of just in detention which was already like his second home.
Of course, the one person who knew for sure it wasn't Jason's knife was Diangelo, who “found” it and threatened to call the teachers’ union if Jason was not removed from his class.
Diangelo had a high, nasally voice when he got nervous and a thin mustache that made him look like some kind of old movie villain. The rest of him, though, looked more like the hero. Smooth. Dark eyes. A haircut that said how much it cared. Girls begged to be in his classes and hung on his every word like they would like to be hanging on his lips and he looked them in the eyes like he would like that too.
Jason despised John Diangelo.
Jason himself had certain standards. No middle-schoolers. No freshmen for anything but kissing. No one desperate for him—because Jason wasn’t desperate for any of them and desperation seemed like it really needed to go both ways to be any fun at all.
Jason believed Diangelo did not share this code. He was pretty sure Mr. Diangelo thought a dose of desperation wrapped up in the body of a fifteen- or sixteen-year-old girl was just what the doctor ordered. Jason had no evidence, only warning flags that went off in his brain that said “bad news.”
That sign had been flashing even before two weeks earlier when Jason walked in on the teacher in the bowling alley bathroom nervously shaking hands with Artie Fisher. Jason didn’t hear much, but it clearly wasn’t just a friendly urinal-side chat.
Artie Fisher was not a nice guy. He was not a chatty guy. Artie was known as someone who could get his hands on and in all kinds of things and people for different effects and for the right price. He wasn’t big time. He was just . . . flexible. So while hanging out in the bowling alley bathroom with Artie Fisher did not only mean one thing, the whole range of things it could mean were not things a high school teacher wanted made public.
Putting the Pieces Together
Growing Roots Book 4
by Chelsea Falin
Genre: YA Coming of Age
Living a “normal” life doesn’t always mean that things will always be good. Bad things happen to even the best of people, and this is a life lesson Willie must now learn when tragedy strikes her close-knit group of friends.
As she continues to grow and change, Willie knows that she is far from the girl who arrived in Oklahoma little over a year ago. She’s growing, changing, and working on putting the pieces together in her life – just as her friends struggle to do the same.
“You never know, Willie. Death doesn’t discriminate by age or gender or social status. It’s one of the few things that doesn’t care. When it comes for you, it comes. It could be today, tomorrow, or a hundred years from now, but when your time is up, it’s up. There’s nothing you can do to change that.”-Dakota
It isn't just him, however, Willie must also find out how she fits in with her step-mother and half-siblings. Left in Alabama with no close-in-age peers, Willie makes great strides in finding out who she is as an individual without a group of close friends to rely on.
Alabama offers many firsts for Willie. The most notable in her own mind is her first relationship. There are other firsts in store, however, and a whole new cast of characters to get to know. How will Willie handle this newest experience? Will she handle it in the mature the way she has always handled change? Or will this be the point in which Willie loses herself?
Willie and Babette have long, long been shielded from their own culture and heritage by their mother. When circumstances change, the girls are thrown into what they were once shielded from - only to find it is nothing like they once believed.
While Babette adjusts easily, Willie finds herself much more hesitant. While she struggles to find her true self, Willie is forced to learn she is not the only one suffering from "Less Than Humble Beginnings."
"Try to remember everyone here has their demons, but we put those demons to good use. Make ourselves better, stronger, wiser." - Jack
