REAPER ACADEMY | by Allison West #RecentPublication #Adult #Paranormal #Romance #Excerpt #Giveaway #XpressoBookTours

Reaper Academy
by Allison West
Publication date: February 20th, 2020
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

The professor should be off-limits. But he’s hot. And I’m a bad girl. Lucky for me, he doesn’t play by the rules. Neither do I.
I used to be a princess; that was before I was murdered.
The reaper who took my soul. He’s my professor. And, well, the experience of taking a soul is quite… pleasurable. He wants me. I crave him. It’s against the rules, but do either of us care?
Publisher’s Note: This paranormal thriller contains graphic scenes.

EXCERPT:

“I’m not going anywhere.” Was he really going to spank her? Spankings were for children. Leila was an adult. Hell, she was dead and was a grim reaper. Is this how they kept each other in line and from breaking the rules?
She hadn’t budged an inch.
“If I have to put you over my knee, it will double your allotment of spankings.”
Her cheeks burned with embarrassment and the room sweltered. Was it hot in here or was it just her? “Please, Wynter. I promise I won’t do it again.”
“You’re right, you won’t. I’m going to teach you right from wrong, my little Leila. Good girls listen and do as they’re told. Bad girls face a wrath of punishments. Spankings, my little Leila, are just the beginning.”
“Wynter, what if Emblyn or Violetta come out from their room?” She did not wish to see her grim reaper friends pay witness to her punishment. Leila didn’t dare ask whether Wynter or Jasper dished out such discipline to the other girls on occasion.
He merely shrugged and reached for Leila as she had yet to come closer. His strong grip pulled her down over and across his knee, lifting her dress to reveal her panties underneath.
“These are of no use right now,” he said, using one hand to slide the undergarments down her thighs and to her feet.
She felt humiliated being bent over his lap. He could see her bottom and possibly even her cunny as it began to throb with a ferocious intensity. How was being in this position, exposed and vulnerable, arousing her? Perhaps it had to do more with it being Wynter, taking control, disciplining her.
Without warning, his hand came down, spanking her plush bottom, forcing her to jump and her cheeks to clench with a hiss. The pain stung right through to her lips down below, forcing a further ache and wetness to seep out uncontrollably. With her face bent down to the ground, she was grateful she didn’t have to look at him.

A hero cursed by the gods…

Once one of the greatest heroes Ancient Greece had ever known, Argos is a far cry from the immortal warrior he used to be. After five hundred years of captivity, he is finally free—but a curse from a goddess has left him woefully mortal. In order to become a hero again, he’ll need the help of the gods and the seductive nymph who saved his life.

The only woman who can help him…

Claire Winters is definitely not a nymph, despite the assumptions of the half-naked man whose life she saved. Taking care of a delusional man while a storm rages is not what she planned – especially not as she gets ready to open her dream restaurant. She doesn’t have time for the tall tales of her handsome rescue. Yet, here she is.

When it turns out Argos’s claims are real, Claire finds herself thrown deep into a hidden and ancient world. Now, the two strangers must rely on each other to survive. Together they will face the gods, and the fiery attraction between them, as they work to reunite Argos with his ancient powers.

Will strength and wit be enough to protect them? Or will love prove to be the most powerful weapon of all?

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is the first novel in the ORDER OF OLYMPUS series. A sexy, action-packed romance series based on Greek Mythology and set in the modern world.

Ancient heroes never looked this good.

Excerpt:
Her eyes closed at the thought. The boat’s flooring warmed her summer-touched skin, and she hummed happily. The little things, Claire reminded herself. Life is about the little things.
A harsh scraping noise suddenly echoed through the boat, and Claire jumped to attention. She’d been around boats long enough to know that noise.
Sebastian had hit something.
Carefully she took in the water around her. She was anchored at least a couple miles south of her home at Edgewater. Nearly half a mile of water lay between her and the edge of Kent Island. No one was around.
Another harsh noise interrupted her observations, kicking Claire to her feet to investigate Sebastian’s sides. A look portside yielded nothing. She turned to peek over the starboard railing and froze. A small worn rowboat bumped anxiously against the side again. The structure was unlike anything she had ever seen before. The elegantly curved bow was made from a rich wood she didn’t recognize.
She didn’t pay the strange boat much attention after that. Her eyes focused instead on the body taking up its entire length. Muscular limbs stretched and dangled from one end to the other. It was a man, no doubt about that. Claire tried not to dwell on the scrap of cloth hanging around his waist and instead zoomed in on the rise and fall of his chest. From where she peeked down at him, he looked as if he was taking a late-afternoon nap.
“Hello,” she called. “Are you alright down there?”
No response, but he was breathing. That was a relief. His brazened skin looked dry, almost leathery, and his short, rapid breathing didn’t bode well for his overall health. A silver flask was clutched between his fingers, clearly empty from the precarious way it was held. The man had been out in the sun for far too long. Summers on the Chesapeake Bay could be humid, and any amount of time without proper hydration was dangerous.
The scruff along his chin and the length of his hair suggested only one thing—a castaway. Who knew how long he’d been floating in the waters with no help or food? That was a strange thought. The Bay wasn’t that big, and they were far enough north that someone should have spotted his boat. Concern overrode logic for now. The man needed help, and there would be time for questions later. She threw a rope ladder over the railing and prepared to board the small vessel.
Years of living in the city and the warnings of a paranoid mother urged her to stay cautious. As she grabbed two water bottles from her cooler, Claire also picked up the small pocketknife she had stashed under the steering wheel before tucking it into the back pocket of her khakis. She had never used the knife for anything but cutting rope and peeling the occasional apple. She hoped that didn’t change today, but just in case she reminded herself: stick him with the pointy end.
Poking her head back over the railing, the man was still where she’d left him, unmoving. The waves brushed the small rustic rowboat against her own. There was no choice. She scaled down the rope ladder and struggled to place her feet somewhere that wasn’t already taken up by bulging muscles. She wrapped the chain around the bow, successfully connecting the two boats and ensuring that the rowboat wouldn’t be wandering anywhere. Then she concentrated on the stranger. Getting him up the ladder and into shade was an impossible task on her own.
“Hey, wake up.” She brushed her fingertips along the closest part of his body, his bare legs. Her touch started as a gentle poke before shifting into a firm shake when he didn’t respond. Worry clawed up her throat at the idea that he might be seriously injured. She needed to get him awake and get water in him.
But the small boat barely had enough room for the two of them. Claire planted her feet on one side of him, but the waves threatened to send her into the water. Clenching her teeth, she searched for an alternative way to aid the man that didn’t have her fumbling over his naked body.
There was only one option.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, gently straddling his upper body. His breathing didn’t waver under her weight. For a moment, Claire just took in the stranger. Besides the loincloth, the only thing on his body was a web of scars decorating his skin. One danced up his left pectoral muscle and over his shoulder; another sliced across his waist. Others were nothing more than light lines across his dark skin. A necklace made from braided thread with a dull gold coin settled along his collarbone. At least if he had any weapons on his person, he wouldn’t be able to hide them.
What are you talking about? said an awed voice in the back of her mind. Do you see his arms? If those guns aren’t weapons, I don’t know what is.

About the Author:

Loving Greek Mythology as I do, I had no problem at all when Argos showed up in this book, smack dab in modern-day America. Thanks to the beloved Outlander {Ahhhh Jamie love...} it's not uncommon for characters to time-travel or somehow end up in the past. Very few of them, however, come forward in time, making Maria Shield's new series something of a novelty. HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is the first of the series and I love Maria's description and what we can anticipate: "...A sexy, action-packed romance series based on Greek Mythology and set in the modern world...Ancient heroes never looked this good."

Well if this book is what the series is going to be like, each one will be at the top of my TBR list for sure! I lurved Argos (Yes as in Jason and the Argonites) and Claire - their similarities, their differences, their arguments, their love... It was a fun book to read. Now if you're not up on your Greek mythology, never fear. Ms. Shield does a bang-up job of educating you as you go along...and you barely even know it!

I highly recommend this book as a fun, entertaining romance!

Excerpt – Opening Chapter

Before me looms a dissolus demon. Think about a waist-high glob of mayo—only both alive and deadly—and that’s the general idea.
No face.
No limbs.
Just mega-bacteria with attitude.
For hours, I hunted this creature through the forests of Purgatory. Why? I’m both part angel and a demon hunter. One of the thrax. Killing monsters is what my people do. Now I’ve cornered this slimeball (as in a ball literally made of slime) against the back wall of the royal stables.
All that remains is the kill.
This won’t be easy.
Little by little, I pin the dissolus against the wall with my body. The white goo of the demon’s exterior smears across the legs of my Kevlar armor. The creature’s round form pulses, heartbeat style. Reaching forward, I slip my hands through the monster’s outer layer, careful to keep my palms tipped at precisely forty degrees. Unless I use that exact angle combined with slow speed, the demon’s interior will transform from ugly slop into deadly acid.
Then I’ll be dissolved in seconds. Painfully.
Sweat beads down my spine as I search inside the monster. My goal is to find the creature’s nucleus—the equivalent of its heart—which is solid, transparent and egg-shaped. I shift my arms inside the demon’s gooey interior. Slurping sounds ricochet through the air. Across the stables, a horse whinnies. Adrenaline spikes through my system. There’s a time limit here. If I don’t grab the nucleus fast enough, then the demon’s insides will turn acidic anyway.
Again, death. Not a fan.
It’s an effort, but I somehow keep my motions slow and steady. All thoughts collapse into a single goal: Grasp the nucleus.
A familiar voice breaks up the quiet. “Interesting monster, eh?”
Seriously?
That’s Aldred, the Earl of Acca and an extraordinary scumbag. At this point, he and I are the only people in the stables, if you don’t count the demon. Aldred’s a portly fellow, middle-aged with thinning hair and long jowls. His clan, the House of Acca, is a perennial pain in my royal backside. While I spent hours hunting the dissolus, Aldred followed behind at a safe distance. All the while, he released a steady stream of chatter.
“I said,” Aldred really drags out the word said. “Interesting monster, right?”
Interesting isn’t the word I’d use,” I reply.
“What can I say?” Aldred steps beside me, scanning the scene. “I’m an earl, not a walking thesaurus.”
For a moment, I see myself in Aldred’s eyes. I’m Lincoln Vidar Osric Aquilus, High Prince of the Thrax. My family rules the land of Antrum, which is hidden far below Earth’s surface. The rest of the after-realms consist of the angels in Heaven, demons of Hell, quasi-demons in Purgatory, and the ghouls of the Dark Lands. At eighteen, I’m tall and broad-shouldered with brown hair and mismatched irises. I also happen to be leaning over a possessed blob of white goo the size of an engorged Hippity Hop. Being a demon hunter is rarely glamorous. Neither is being royal, for that matter.
“This is taking too long,” declares Aldred. With mincing steps, the earl creeps up beside me.
“Stay back,” I warn. “That’s for your own safety.”
“No, I shall kick it for you.”
“Absolutely not,” I counter. “You’ll end up losing your leg, and that’s if you’re lucky.”
Aldred holds his hands palms forward, in the universal motion for, it’s not my fault. “No need to get testy.”
Frustration sends my thoughts reeling. How did I end up here anyway? The answer flickers through my mind like images on a carousel. On orders from Verus, the Queen of the Angels, my family and I are temporarily residing in Purgatory, along with all our court. Since my people enjoy a medieval lifestyle, we’ve constructed cabins in Purgatory’s Alighieri Woods. This morning, a dissolus broke free from our royal menagerie. Cue me chasing the monster through the forest while the earl follows behind.
Which brings me to the present moment and imminent death.

My Review:
If you haven't had the marvelous experience that is reading something from Christina Bauer, especially part or all of the AngelBound or AngelBound Offspring series then you are in for a treat with  Lincoln. Christina has a real gift for writing.  I LOVE Lincoln! She portrays him with depth of character, drama, great fight scenes and true love.  It just doesn't get better than that.

Christina's worldbuilding capability is unbelievable.  The scenes she builds in Lincoln are like a movie in your mind. It causes the pace of the story to progress at an ideal rate and you know what is happening at all times.  While part of a series, it can be read alone. Soooo if you like first-rate angel/Nephilim/demon stories, Christina Bauer is the place to go and Lincoln is one of the books to read!

EXCERPT:
As much as I liked to pretend, I wasn’t completely and totally intrigued by the thought of new people moving here; I couldn’t control myself. I tried to convince myself it was all because of my mom; but as I stood there, whispering the words, I knew there was no fooling myself.
“Henley, don’t you know it’s not polite to stare?” she asked, but her own hypocritical words hung heavy in the air as she raced to join me in the living room again.
Standing next to me, we watched intently as the driver’s side door opened. With large eyes, we strained to get a glimpse of who would be our new neighbor. To our surprise, the rest of the car doors opened and the family emerged.
A tall man with dark hair closed the driver’s side door as a woman emerged from the passenger’s side. The back two doors opened and three teens, roughly around my age, tumbled out. A girl with short, dark hair and legs-for-days gave the house a disgusted look. A boy who seemed to be uninterested in it all, stared down into his phone, which he held tightly in his grip. Finally, a tall boy with the same dark hair stood behind the rest of his family. With his hands tucked deep into his jeans pockets, he seemed reluctant to move any closer to the house.
“Well, they look like a nice family,” my mom said. I turned to look at her and I could see the eagerness twinkling in her baby blues to get to her phone and be the first one to spill the news that the new neighbors had arrived.
It was almost like they had landed in a spaceship and were from outer space!
“Maybe,” I grumbled, still unsure about these people.
Suddenly, the boy, standing alone behind his family, turned and caught me snooping on them. Our eyes connected for a brief moment before he gave me an angry snarl that had me stumbling backward.
What was that?
“I need to go call Susan,” my mom stated, as she rushed to the kitchen to retrieve her phone.
I dared to look back out the window again; and when I did, the entire family was gone.
Just disappeared, like they had never been standing there in the first place.
I blinked, just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. When I looked again, the SUV was still parked along the curb, but the family was gone.
Lights glowed from inside the house.
“That’s weird,” I said aloud to myself. How did they have time to get inside and turn on the lights? I literally just turned around for a second.
I shook my head, unsure of what to think. Peeking out of the window again, something in the far, second-floor window caught my attention. As my gaze moved up, I felt my cheeks burn and nervous energy flow through me. As my gaze finally landed on the window, I caught a pair of red eyes staring back at me. It was the same boy who had given me the nasty stare just moments before.
I closed the curtains and took a step back. My heart was racing so fast, I feared it might jump right out of my chest. With labored breathing, I slowly walked into the kitchen where my mom was blabbing the news to anyone who would listen.

REVIEW:
I know I always say that I love whatever type of book I have read but it's true and I love Paranormal romances. I did the blitz on Shadowed and decided it sounded so good and so intriguing that when Michelle offered me a copy, I could not turn it down!

Now, it turned out that it wasn't exactly what I expected with some characters I didn't care for but overall, I enjoyed the read. I cannot say which characters I didn't care for as that would be a spoiler but it kept me entertained throughout.  It was a quick read and had a unique spin on some Paranormal characters you don't usually see in this manner.  If you love Paranormal YA reads and are looking for something unique, give it a go!

3⭐️⭐️⭐️

A .big thank you to Michelle Areaux and Xpresso Book Tours for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review.  All opinions are my own.

I just love books that I pick up and then cannot, in spite of everything else going on in my life, put it down.  This was one of those books!  I simply became immersed in it. I loved how relatable the characters were.  Meara was such an endearing main character.  My heart was breaking for her and her terminally ill mom.  And Evan...oh Evan...what a perfect male protagonist!  He showed great empathy for Meara and man, was he a hottie!!

One of the best things was the Worldbuilding that Kelly had done.  I loved her locations, especially once they moved near the cold Atlantic Ocean. Brrrr.  She made me want hot tea and a warm blankie to read with.

If you know me at all, you know I have a wide taste in book genres, ranging from historical (come see historicalgraffiti.blog, my new Historical review blog!) to Fantasy to Contemporary Westerns to Fairytales to Paranormal books and more.  Never Forgotten is a combo Paranormal/Fantasy but where the characters are king...the ideal balance for all that is involved here.  Oooh, and it even has Selkies!  (Not sure what a Selkie is?  Read the Outlander series!)

All in all, this wonderful, clean book has me dying for the next book in the series.  Thank you, Kelly, for a whole new world to read and fall in love with!

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received this book freely upon request from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review.  All opinions are my own.

Although excited about gaining real world experience, it's the thought of seeing Meara that really drives him. Unfortunately, Evan finds it hard to focus on anything when he's suffering from vivid nightmares and screaming headaches.

When Meara and Evan reunite, everything seems to fall back into place. The summer appears to be perfect. Then two of her father's guards are found dead, and foul play is suspected. The façade melts away. Someone is targeting them, and Meara must discover who it is and why. She turns to Evan to help her, but when he gives her the hot and cold treatment, she's left feeling alone and confused.

As the puzzle pieces move into place, will Meara be able to solve the mystery in time to save her clan and her relationship?

Always Remembered
The Never Forgotten Series Book 3
Publication Date: May 19, 2015

Always Remembered is the third novel in the best-selling Never Forgotten series by Kelly Risser.

One clue… what does it mean?

Ken, the leader of the Blue Men of the Minch, has kidnapped Evan. Before they left, Evan was able to leave a package for Meara—her grandfather's necklace wrapped in a cloth napkin with one word written in blood. Azuria. Unfortunately, Meara doesn't understand it and neither does her dad or Kieran.

When Dad and Aunt Brigid attempt to rescue Evan, Meara and Kieran begin to train the clan on how to fight and defend their home. A war is brewing, and Meara is determined their people must prepare for the battle. The training sessions are long and arduous, but the Selkies work hard to learn.

Meanwhile, Evan wakes and finds himself in Belle Tresor, the home of sirens. He's bound to his blue form, unable to transform to human, and Ken has plans to use Evan's powers to destroy the Selkies. Thankfully, he's not alone. He befriends a siren named Deanna and several Blue Men. Can he trust them to help him escape or do they have ulterior motives?

As both sides prepare for an ultimate confrontation, the stakes are high and friendships are tested. Some will rise to be victorious. Some will be destroyed. But love and loyalty will be always remembered in this exciting conclusion to the Never Forgotten series.

Sea of Memories
A Novella Collection in the Never Forgotten Series
Publication Date: November 3, 2015

Sometimes, we reach the end of a story and realize there is more to be told. This is the case with Sea of Memories, a collection of novellas set in the world of Never Forgotten. Fans of this series will not be disappointed!

Travel with Meara and Kieran to North America where they visit her grandparents and his family. Along the way, stop at Mirage, the dance club where the couple first met, and see the encounter from Kieran's point of view.
Struck in the Club - On the orders of his father, Kieran travels to Nova Scotia to spy on David's daughter. After an encounter in a dance club, he may have found more than he bargained for.

Journey to the past and meet Kieran's mom, Sera. Learn why she is no longer part of their lives.
What Will Be - Sera is a Selkie who enjoys her family and her daily routine of solitude. While out on one of her morning swims, she finds an injured man floating in the ocean. Unable to see anyone suffer, she rescues him, even after the warnings she received as a child about the evilness of human males. He may be safe now, but is she?

Go back to where it all started and discover along with Meara how her parents met and fell in love.
A Rock and A Hard Place – Visiting his maternal grandparents in Nova Scotia, David is determined to find out who murdered his parents and why. He doesn't expect the evidence to take him to a small fishing village called Peggy's Cove. He certainly doesn't expect to find love there, especially when it comes in the form of a spunky little brunette… and a human one at that.

Finally, join Meara, Ula, and other friends old and new to remember the past, celebrate the present, and anticipate the future.
Something Blue - Ula's been invited to a banquet at Ronac in her niece's honor. Because it will be Meara's first Christmas without her mom, Ula convinces her boyfriend, Vesh, and others that they need to throw a surprise holiday celebration. Selkies don't celebrate Christmas and neither do the Blue Men of the Minch. It will be a holiday full of surprises for all.

Kelly Risser knew at a young age what she wanted to be when she grew up. Unfortunately, Fairytale Princess was not a lucrative career. Leaving the castle and wand behind, she entered the world of creative business writing where she worked in advertising, marketing, and training at various companies.

She's often found lamenting, "It's hard to write when there's so many good books to read!" So, when she's not immersed in the middle of someone else's fantasy world, she's busy creating one of her own. This world is introduced in her first novel, Never Forgotten.

Kelly lives in Wisconsin with her husband and two children. They share their home with Clyde the Whoodle and a school of fish.
