STICKS AND STONES | by Dianne Beck #YoungAdult #Contemporary #BookReview #XpressoBookTours #Giveaway

Sticks & Stones
Dianne Beck
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: March 18th, 2020
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
When fifteen-year-old Emily Greene wakes up to police banging on her door, she is shocked to see her mother arrested on drug charges.
Uprooted and in disbelief, Emily moves to a new town to stay with her grandmother, known as Crazy Carol for her outspoken faith and quirky behaviors. As if the arrest isn’t enough, kids at her new school immediately begin to stereotype and judge her based on the news they’ve heard about her mom.
Emily is sure her mother’s fiancĂ© is to blame for the crime. He has conveniently disappeared since the day of the arrest. She’s determined to find him, and prove he’s at fault. But something awful happens, shaking her world yet again.
After this string of tragedies, Emily starts to question God, but is gently and consistently reminded by her grandmother, through stories she tells of all the sticks, leaves, and stones she collects, that God is her good and faithful parent.
Emily must learn that the words others say about her don’t matter, that her mom’s mistakes don’t define her, and she is always deeply loved by her heavenly father. If only she can learn to forgive herself.

My Review:

This delightful novel is all about one girl's brave journey through loneliness and feeling lost to friendship, love, family, and faith.  There was even a dash of romance that was just about right.  It is fast-paced and a story that was easy to fall in love with.  It was both beautiful and inspiring and I recommend it to lovers of faith-based YA novels.

Dianne’s debut young adult novel, Sticks and Stones, was inspired by her years of teaching, where she saw so many students struggle with varying issues, and also experienced how an understanding ear and relevant literature could make a significant impact on their lives. She hopes young people, as well as adults, can find faith and strength, like her main character Emily does, even when things seem to be falling apart.
Dianne is motivated daily by her faith in God, her husband, and her four adult children. When she’s not writing, she can be found reading, sipping coffee, browsing a bookstore, or pursuing a part-time faith and fitness ministry at www.ofcommonground.com.

EMBERHAWK | by Jamie Foley #YA #Fantasy #BookReview #5Stars #Giveaway #SilverDaggerBookTours

Ember Hawk
The Katrosi Revolution Book 1
by Jamie Foley
Genre: YA Fantasy

The elementals have decided they're gods, and humans are nothing but fuel for their fire.

A starving trapper.

Merciless drought withers Kira's ranch, leaving her family hungry—and desperate enough to cross the border into the forbidden forest to trap wild game.

But the forest is infested with tree-scorpions and giant cats that wield elemental invisibility, and they're hungry, too. When Kira mistakes one elemental creature for another, she ends up with the last thing she wants in her trap: an enemy soldier.

An invisible spy.

Ryon can't afford to be a prisoner of war. If the Malaano Empire extracts his secrets, the rumors of war will be confirmed—and the tribes stand little chance against the Empire unless they can put aside generations of bad blood for the sake of a Tribal Alliance.

When Ryon's escape leaves Kira injured and her livelihood in flames, Ryon must choose between aiding her… or returning to his chieftess with vital information. But can he survive the trek when an elemental pursues him for his rejected heritage?

A sacrificial princess.

Imperial Princess Vylia is given a powerful ancient stone as her wave singer trials approach. But is the stone's whispering voice from the water goddess, or a masquerading elemental the creator god imprisoned millennia ago?

When Vylia's diplomatic mission to the tribal lands erupts in fiery revenge, she, Kira, and Ryon must work together to survive—or become pawns in the battle of the gods.

One good look at this cover and I was in love with Emberhawk.  Even better, the story doesn't disappoint one iota!  And such a cool, unique world!  Wow!  I loved the characters.  They were full of empathy,  likeability, relatability, huge dynamics, and well-developed. I especially liked Lysander...lol. The world-building and plot itself were such a great adventure. So if you are looking for a story with high stakes danger, witty banter, and a sprinkle of romance, Emberhawk is for you.

Highly recommend for 15+ for some romance, peril, injuries, and mild violence.

Excerpt:

His fingers brush mine when he takes the knife, and I fight back a shiver, trying to hold my ground.
“Scorpion,” he says softly.
I brace myself for more Pike wisdom, or maybe even a mention of the kisses we’ve shared that we haven’t mentioned.
Instead, he smiles. “You’ve been a very good teacher. Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Yes.”
“If you say so.”
He takes his stance, gaze zeroed in on the board. He’s wearing a simple blue shirt, cut off at the shoulders, and his muscles flex when he lifts his arm.
I exhale just as he throws and the knife zooms to the board, hitting inside the widest ring, but not in the middle.
His eyes narrow. I smile.
“I’d like to see you do this with a distraction,” he says.
My heart flutters, but I nod. “No problem.”
I step to the line, a whole head shorter than Pike. I feel his eyes on me. In fact, he’s so close, I feel the heat from his body. But I’m focused, and all I can see is the red circle I’m aiming for.
I squeeze the blade between my fingers and hold my breath, preparing to throw.
Pike blows on my neck.
Chills race across my skin even as I fling the knife. The blade hits the board with a thud, straight in the middle.
Pike curses softly and shakes his head. I turn to him, unable to help the smile stretching wide across my face. “See? I know a little something about focus.”
“I’m impressed.”
“Looks like you could use some practice.”
“What about on the mat?” He lifts an eyebrow. “Do you have focus there?”
Uh…no. But Pike doesn’t need to know that. “I have focus anywhere.”
He points. “Mat. Now.”
I lift my chin, toss the last knife at the board, and smirk when it hits the center. Then I walk to the mat. I get into my stance before he joins me. I wouldn’t put it past him to attack right away. Pike’s a big fan of not being caught off guard, and he’s taught me accordingly.
Pike stalks the edge of the mat, knees bent. He feigns a lunge, then laughs when I tense.
“You’re lucky I don’t have a knife,” I say, mock warning in my tone.
He takes a step closer. “Luck has nothing to do with it. It’s all about being prepared. Besides, I don’t want a hole in my side like Mongo.”
“He deserved it.”
Pike gives me his dangerous smile and takes another step. Almost close enough to reach me. “You’re not saying I deserve to be stabbed, are you?”
My chest vibrates with a low laugh, but I’m still on guard. “No, Pike. Not today, anyway.”
His smile lights his eyes. And suddenly he stands fully, shoulders relaxing, and closes the gap between us.
I draw in a sharp breath. “What are you doing?”
“What does it look like?”
His hands skim my arms, making me shiver. I lift my chin to meet his eyes, lips parting slightly.
“Pike,” I say, my voice coming out breathless.
Then he sweeps my legs from beneath me. I hit the mat hard, banging my elbows. I kick out and almost catch Pike’s leg, but he’s too fast. He bends and snags my arm, twisting it behind my back as he pushes me flat on my stomach. My breath whooshes out, but I don’t struggle. Crap. So much for proving I can’t be distracted.

My Review:

As a rule, I am not a big fan of Dystopian stories - too many bad memories of reading ANIMAL FARM in High School. Lol I chose to give Cindy Wilson's book a try after reading that she'd strongly referenced THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, a fave, and that it was essentially a Robin Hood trope. I am SO glad that I did because this book ROCKS!!

Cindy did a fabulous job with the character development as well as the relationship dynamics.  Her characters are compelling and deal with issues that teens can relate to, such as broken relationships, challenging romances and learning to form new bonds of trust with others. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew them. Her wonderful world-building takes the basics of dystopian sci-fi and puts a fresh spin on it with unique cultural elements, technology, and drama.

I was completely drawn to every page. There was no over-the-top angst, just very powerful characters doing the best they could with what was available. While it was written for teens and young adults, it would appeal to all ages.  Yes, it is a romance but mainly it’s about trust, kindness, and patience.

Overall this was a great read, able to be something entirely new and different while at the same time giving a nod to one of my all-time favorite classic stories. I recommend this to anyone who likes great characters, terrific world-building, and YA dystopian books. A total knockout!

My Review

I really enjoyed this short and sweet cruise ship romance.  The characters were so relatable, especially Caitlyn.  From the moment she accidentally dropped her phone overboard (with me it was in the tub - cringe!) to when her ex-fiance shows up (with me, I was the last to know I was getting dumped on a trip - grrr!) to her time spent getting to know Greg (yep, and I got my man!) it was one giant ocean-going adventure after the other making it a fun read.  I loved the chemistry between the main characters and before long, I was cheering for love to prevail.  I think you will too as you escape into this terrific heartwarming book.

Trickster
Christina Bauer
(Angelbound Lincoln, #3)
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: February 25th, 2020
Genres: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult
***A hilarious adventure after the events of Angelbound SCALA … and it’s all from Prince Lincoln’s point of view!!!***
With the drama of the Soul Towers and Lucifer’s Orb behind them, Myla and Lincoln look forward to sharing some quality time. Perhaps they’ll even do a ‘regular couple thingie’ like a dinner date. Or they could kill more demons together. Myla isn’t picky.
Then a trickster gets released inside Antrum’s secure borders. And by trickster, we’re talking a giant orange monkey with magical powers and a love of causing drama with uptight thrax.
Looks like date night is on hold.

My Book Review:
I'd love to spend just one day inside Christina's imagination...but I guess that's what I get to do every time I read one of her books! ;) ;)  And how could I NOT be excited to read the next installment in her Angelbound series??  LOL

I just adore Lincoln. He and Myla go together like peanut butter and jelly. <3 <3 <3 Peli was a super trixsy monkey.  He kind of reminded me of the fabled Chinese Monkey King. Then there was that evil Earl of Acca (always a good villain), sentient fighting trees and so much more.  Lincoln and Myla had to stay on their toes making the adventure and fun good all around.  I just loved it all and you will too!  Get your copy now!

Oh My Gosh! EK Blair is BACK and she had DONE IT AGAIN!!!! The SECRETS pulled me right on through that emotional magnifying glass, straight into ALL THE FEELS that she is so well known for!  She broke my heart and stole my soul in this book and I'm hoping she'll put it all back together in The TRUTHS.

This story is an intense, emotional, and wild ride and you will feel every single emotion right along with the characters in this story. There is definitely some heavy subject matter that will not be for all readers.  I guess you could call this a New Adult Emotional Romance and if it sounds like something you'd like, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT!

Could a “chance” meeting between Alex and Riley set them both on the path God always intended?

(Affiliate link included.)

My Book Review

What an outstanding and feel-good-in-the-end book!  Two characters, both living a life other than what they had planned, both struggling emotionally.  One who's lost her job and a loved one, one who's been a Marine and done multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan. Both hurting yet meet by 'chance'.  Jaye Elliot did a fantastic job of setting up the perfect story then setting it on it's up and down trajectory.  Alex and Riley are so loveable and they move the plot along rather than the plot moving them.  I adored their love story and how they were able to help each other and the faith that finds it's way back into their hearts.

There is a serious plot twist towards the end that could make or break the story and hearts. Jaye did a beautiful job with this and kudos for focusing on such a common and painful issue.  I highly recommend this book to all lovers of Christian Contemporary Romance lovers!

SLUMBER | by Becky Bird #FairyTaleRetelling #YA #Fantasy #BookReview #BeckyBird

SLUMBER
by Becky Bird
Published: July 10, 2019
Pages: 207
Genre: Fairy Tale Retelling, YA Fantasy

A YA retelling of classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty

Prince Thomas cannot take the throne without a queen. Though the problem isn’t his lack of suitors but his refusal to marry a princess that is less than perfect.

The cardinal presents him with an opportunity: a quest to find the most beautiful princess in the land who has been in slumber for a century. But, unbeknown to the prince, the cardinal plans to kill him as soon as the prince embarks on his quest, and take the throne for himself.

Luckily, Prince Thomas’s path crosses with Lucy, a spirited orphan runaway, who saves his life and convinces the prince to continue the quest. When they eventually find Princess Aurora, they also find another contender – Prince Philip – vying for the princess’s heart.

Despite their mutual disdain for each other, Lucy agrees to assist the prince, and Thomas accepts her help to keep him alive long enough to beat out his competition and return to rule his kingdom alongside his perfect bride.

They just don’t count on falling for each other in the process.

Fairy Tales and retellings are totally my jam and Sleeping Beauty is my all-time favorite. Not because of Aurora and Prince Phillip but because of Maleficent! But I digress. When I saw that SLUMBER was a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, I could not get my hands on it fast enough!  I didn't care about the description. I just wanted to read it.

Come to find out, it's really not about Aurora and Phillip.  I mean, they're there and the kiss takes place and all but the story is about something completely different - what happens when we look past what we think we are SUPPOSED to want to what we REALLY want.  What a perfect concept to focus on in today's world!

It's a short quick read that turns the original story of SLEEPING BEAUTY upside down.  It has super likable characters like Lucy and her pal Jack and some that are less so like Thomas and Aurora.  The book is full of magic, girl-power (yay!), humor and true love - perfect for a likable Fairy tale retelling change of pace!

Genres: YA Contemporary
Barely seventeen and as pretty as can be: the summer is their playground. Cait and her best friends Steph and Allie take on San Francisco’s party scene with fake IDs and short dresses.
When Cait meets Adrien Cross, the charismatic lead singer of her favorite indie band, she’s introduced to a hedonistic world of liquor and lust that she never wants to leave. But then that world spirals out of control and the harsh realities of reckless living take a toll on Cait and the ones she loves. What will be left when the makeup masks wash off, the bottles are empty, and Cait begins to lose her grip on everything?
Katey Taylor’s heart-wrenching debut novel will have you strapped into the intense rollercoaster ride of Cait’s life and one chaotic summer that will change it all.

My Book Review
This is a beautifully written, poignant story with some truly heart-wrenching moments. What a wonderful debut novel. Katey, well done you!

I was invested from the very beginning of the book. You immediately get an inkling that someone is going to get hurt, what with all the partying and drinking Cait and her friends do.

Inebriated is an intense read filled with stereotypical teenagers who sneak out at night, lie to their parents and party to some serious extremes. This is a great young adult novel that shows the realities of partying and drinking and all of the unfortunate repercussions often come with it.  Many readers will enjoy this story, especially if you like books that are truly pragmatic. Personally, I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to many books by Katey in the future.
